Today, we'll talk about how to find an inexpensive, but trailworthy beginner mountain bike. In this video I use a $329 XC Hard tail mountain bike as an example, and even do a little bit of shredding on it.

After watching this, and watching when he fixes up an old overdrive, I just realized they could be considered a series.

I really appreciate your 'matter of fact' attitude about the things you review. It's refreshing to hear someone who's obviously seeking the best thing for everyone.

I spent $400 on a new 2017 Specialized Hardrock hardtail. Has all of these qualities mentioned here and more. I've had it 2 years and have yet to have any major issues with it. Absolutely perfect beginner bike.

Upgraded to a 2020 Stump Jumper ST 29er now but I can't sell the Hardrock. Hanging onto it for buddies to ride and for me to play around on. Still an awesome and very capable bike.

When I first started getting into mountain biking seriously my first "real" mountain bike (a 2015 Trek MT220) had none of the things mentioned here besides a derailluer hanger, and even though I knew it wasn't that great of a bike I still rode the hell out of it, did lots of maintenance on it, and the only thing that needs replacing is the tubes. I even sent it off a few small drops and took it all around the city, jumping all over curbs and it's still in good condition. Even if your bike isn't so great, just get out and ride! No excuses!

This is probably the best biking channel on YouTube! Properly addressed every crucial aspect of a decent starter bike without the usual BS I'm used seeing around, most of the videos I've seen they basically say to throw away your beginner bike and buy one that costs more than a house.

Saw a dude shredding a bike like that on the north shore last ride. It doesn't matter what bike you have as long as you having fun and getting rad.

Thanks for the concise information. Someone looking for a good bike doesn't necessarily want to drop the equivalent of rent for something good. They also don't want to get something so cheap it breaks fast. Good video! 👍

Diamondback Overdrive was the first (and only) mountain bike I bought when I was 12. Eight years later, still just as fun and still holding strong!
