Turkey earthquake: Drone video of deep earth fissures reveals quake's true impact

Drone footage in southern Turkey showed earth fissures slicing across fields, roads, streams and hillsides, caused by a massive earthquake that struck the region on Monday. The jagged scar of bare and cracked earth showed the extent of the severity of the 7-8 magnitude earthquake.

The combined death toll from the deadliest quake in the region in two decades that struck southern Turkey and Syria stood at more than 22,000 on Friday.

Areas as wide as a soccer field were ripped open. The epicenter of the quake happened near the triple junction of the Anatolian, African and Arabian plates. The latter two are moving apart from one another. That means that the transform faults that mark the transition points from divergent boundaries to convergent boundaries can be pulled apart instead of simply sliding past one another like they usually do. That's what happened here.
