The notion that spring goddesses aren't being characterized by the SEASON of spring but instead an actual literal spring of water is so wild and makes so much more sense! Perhaps when Persephone joins Hades in the fall/winter it was to explain why the water level went down affecting spring fed irrigation causing crops to deteriorate. (Which would hold a stronger tie to Demeter's grief since she is a harvest goddess)

I would like to add also :

•Augusta = Great;
•Regina = queen;
•Virgo = virgin;
•Caelestis = celestial;
•Felix = happy and/or lucky;
•Sancta = saint/sacred;
•Omnivaga = she who wanders everywhere;
•Arduinna = which was a goddess on her own but after the Romans invaded the Ardennes she became an epithet of Diana (i think it’s the one you were thinking about at 8:30); this is very common as many goddesses and mythological figures became part of Diana during the centuries.

Sometimes some epithets were paired with others like:
•Caelestis Diana Augusta
(Great celestial Diana);
•Diana Regina Caelestis
(Diana Queen of Heaven/Queen of the sky);
•Diana Virgo Caelestis
(Diana Celestial/ Heavenly Virgin);

A title of Luna, goddess which was later conflated with Diana, is “Siderum Regina Bicornis” = 2 horned (crescent moon crown) queen of the stars.

UPG Sometimes i use latin adjectives as epithets whenever i’m referring to a specific form of Diana (ex, dulcis = sweet/ obscura = mysterious).
Hope this long ass comment helped you 😂

This type of video is great for anyone even considering working with a deity. It shows how much time, work and research can (potentially) go into the process of learning about a god/goddess and deciding whether or not they might be the right fit for you. Of course bc Diana's so popular you're going to find a lot of info but even for lesser known gods/goddesses you never know what you'll find if you're willing to put in the work. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🙏

This is similar to African, Carribean, and Latino deities! The term 'caminos' which translates to 'paths' is used instead of epithets but is essentially the same meaning. So one deity can have many different paths that are venerated and worked with differently depending on the camino of the spirit. Love the similarities between cultures and practices throughout the world!

In Romania we have Iana Sânziana, a lunar character and the sister-fiancee of Saint Sun, who lived on the ancient island Leuke from the Black Sea. The name Sânziana itself comes from Latin ”Sancta Diana”, but the sânziene in Romanian folklore are usually floral fae-like (zână≃fairy) beings celebrated on the Summer Solstice, so Iana Sânziana seems to be somewhat separate from them. The Dacian/Thracian goddess Bendis was also kind of conflated with Diana, Artemis, and Hecate.

Loved the video! I wasn't aware og soo many of the epithets! I found a lot of overlap with other deities. A hint for all: The YT Channel Overly Sarcastic Productions has great video series talking about how god/desses have changed over time and how to think hollistically about epithets and differing aspects of deities. It isn't witchy at all, but very well executed anthropology.

I personally would love a video about all the different aspects of Italian witchcraft vs. folklore, as I am unsure where to start in my ancestral work and see you as a great source for getting into my Italian roots! <3 love your videos by the way! From one English major to another, I love the more scholarly/academic approach you take!

Hi Frankie! I have two academic articles I (legally) downloaded a while ago. One of them is called "Daughters of Diana" and talks about funerary statues of Roman girls and its significance. The other is called "On the Origins of Diana" which I think is very self explanatory. I could send them to you if you'd like.

I would love to learn about Italian witchcraft vs folk magick! You are so intelligent, it’s sometimes scary! You should consider doing a Master’s degree in literature or anthropology, you’d do awesome and I can just imagine your thesis. Thanks!

There are also many epithets that were passed down orally so we don’t know their origin: Mellifica, meaning “she who makes honey” comes from a type of bees and this relates her to bees and honey; Abundia meaning abundant, and Satia meaning full relates her to food/harvest/etc; Richella or Ricca meaning rich relates her to commerce but mostly money, gold and other expensive things.
Also in Ariccia she was know as Victrix (victorious) Opifera (worker) Conservatrix (savior) these last two epithets were used especially when they prayed to her for healing, Venatrix (huntress).
There are probably a lot more but these are just that come to mind right now.

You can propably find something about Dziewanna - Jan Długosz wrote that Diana was named that in slavic mitology ("counterpart").

The Slavic goddess Devanna is essentially an epithet of Diana (however it’s a chicken-egg situation because Slavic tribes were arguably some of the first polytheists and were quite isolated from outside influences so they are definitely influenced by each other but the connection is unknown as far as I know)

I love your videos lol I can't help but remember the story of my baptism. My mom says the preist gave her A LOT of flack for naming me Diana. She said the president straight up criticized her "Diana? What kind of name is that to give to a child?! Why not something beautiful like Maria?" LOL of course my mom could care less but I guess that preist had a huge vendetta against Diana because he poured so much water on me he nearly drowned me I was gasping and coughing!! Lol just thought it would be a funny story
