The Mythology Guy

...

Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the patron and protector of young girls, and was believed to bring disease upon women and relieve them of it. Artemis was worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth and midwifery along with Eileithyia. Much like Athena and Hestia, Artemis preferred to remain a maiden and is sworn never to marry.

Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities, and her temple at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Artemis' symbols included a bow and arrow, a quiver and hunting knives and the deer and the cypress were sacred to her. Diana, her Roman equivalent, was especially worshipped on the Aventine Hill in Rome, near Lake Nemi in the Alban Hills, and in Campania.

Every time "weird" or "eccentric" is mentioned in this video, it shows a small blonde girl dancing in front of a red sun. I just want everyone reading this to know that girls name is Aurora, and she is an incredibly gifted vocalist and composer. Please go check out her music.

Your work is amazing! Would love a video on Hecate in her own right. Some of the male gods, Zeus, Apollo and Dionysus would be cool too :)

Great video yet again! I like how you’ve shown different interpretations of Artemis and mixed in the clips from Princess Mononoke to show the wild side of her character. Very cool.

Well, as I’m a JS Bach devotee for over 35 years (classical musician here, keyboard and voice) I already knew I was going to love this when I heard the Brandenburg Concerto playing - I discovered these when I was 12 years old. This was a beautiful choice of music and then you followed it up with Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, first movement. I’m sure Artemis would have approved. Such purity of music she would be entranced. Then you had footage of the film "Orlando" with the incomparable Tilda Swinton. I am crazy about the book and the film. Your sense of taste is first class. The video was beautifully crafted and I loved the narration.

A version of Actaeon and the hounds is also found in Celtic mythology. In my opinion, the most famous depiction of Diana-Artemis is the Augustus Saint-Gaudens statue that was first placed atop Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1893. There is a nice half-scale Diana from the 1928 displayed in New York MET today.

In ancient Greek art Hecket is shown in the same short dress and hairstyle as Artemis, excepting that she carries two torches. I'm a little surprised there was no mention of Actaeon. In the Vatican an ancient fresco shows A group of children worshipping Diana, and a group of little girl miniature statues were found in Brauron, at the shrine of Artemis..

Thanks for info, presented very nicely.

Missed the Orion part. I am researching for my feminine archetype: Huntress.

It makes me happy to know that there's a man out there trying to show the whole world what women were what women still can be

That's a great video and the information included are special, take it from a Greek! Artemis really is my favourite Goddess, too. By far the most complicated and deep one.

Fun stuff! I was hoping for a mention of her temple at Ephesus, but I assume you would’ve seen that as expanding the scope to human history, as opposed to strictly mythology.
