His leg touches the net as he goes up, he loses the match. The point is that Art loses but regains his passion for tennis, Patrick wins and gets the winnings, proves he is a great player, as well as him and Art rekindling their feelings for each other. And Tashi gets to feel the same electrifying feeling she got from playing tennis but now can finally experience it again vicariously through them like she has been trying to do with Art for years. It isn't who won, the fact is they all won, they all got what they wanted. That's the genius of this film the whole time you are thinking "Oh man who is going to come out on top, someone has to win." But the shot at 2:35/2:36 shows Art touching the net, Pat throwing away his racket and chance to win the match (which he still does) for the sake of his friendship, and Tashi rising from her seat feeling the thing she loves most in her life for the first time in years, that in one moment, one single moment that can only exist in a tennis match for these characters, they all win.

This is filmmaking and storytelling as high as it can be, the scene alone is nothing, NOTHING, but you need the set up of the 2 hours before it, the past, explanation of what the two players are doing in a match, the scary part of the knees in slow mo, the camera, the music and the orgamisc end and both smiling... this is a perfect ending for a movie.

This movie is so well directed. Even if you dont know shit about tennis, the storytelling, the shots, the acting, the music, makes for a great movie.

I saw this somewhere and I totally agree. Tashi and Patrick are basically the same person, their lust for each other is rooted in narcissism, and because they are so alike, there can never be any real love there. Art is both their opposites, and that’s why they both need him in their own dysfunctional way. You can see so many times in the movie that Patrick has been in love with Art forever, and that Art obeys Tashi like a soldier because she’s so dominant, just like Patrick.

Just realized the movie jumps back and forth, but closer and closer to the present until we reach this point in the movie, kinda like how Art and Patrick rally back and forth, getting close and closer until they both meet at the net
