For decades, people with type 1 diabetes have heard that a cure is just “5-10 years away” – yet here we are, still waiting. Many have grown skeptical, but after this conversation, you might just walk away with hope! Journalist and fellow T1D Ginger Vieira joins me to break down the latest breakthroughs in diabetes cure research. From companies that have already cured people to game-changing innovations that eliminate the need for immunosuppressants, Ginger dives into why there is real incentive for a cure, and why we might be closer than ever before.

I was diagnose in 1984 at the age of 3. At that time doctors told my mother I would be cured by the time I was 18. After over 40 years of dealing with T1D I am grateful for the advancements in treatment but how nice would it be to see what life is like without T1D?

I can't wait. I've been t1 for 23 years now. I'm just tired of fighting. I'm ready to go back to being normal.

Great episode. I've had type 1 for 59 years and have been hearing this ever since I was diagnosed. Its been amazing the different treatments that have come thru this time. I've been pumping for 38 years which has been a game changer for me.. I just wish we had all the pumps here in New Zealand instead of been limited to 2 as not all pumps are suitable for all people. I pray and hope a cure does come but we will see.

Super interesting! Thanks Justin and Ginger. As someone who has only been diagnosed for 3 years also my ears perked up at your experience with Januvia. My insurance doesn’t cover it and it is >$500 per month. Hence, I decided not to go that route (A1c is still in the mid 5s). Anyway, your experience confirms my hesitancy. You didn’t talk about it in this video but I am very hopeful about smart insulins that will help us get from now to the day when a cure is available.

I was newly 16 when i got diagnosed, based on conversations with many ppl that were diagnosed as infants and that were diagnosed late 20s or older, we all came to the same conclusion that in puberty is the worst effing time to develop type 1

I'm 23 now and still notice some after effects, both on my diabetes itself but also on my development as a human being (mentally).

Found out I had diabetes in 96 when I was 15, told a cure was coming within 5yrs and I know people who have had a pancreas transplant. Yes im jaded, A LOT, diabetes is to much of a money maker to cure

I can trust a ceo or researcher that has a stake in the game like a child with T1D. I've heard the cure promise for 30 years. I'm pretty skeptical still. I know there will be a cure eventually, but I'm not holding my breath for any time soon. My guess is close to 10 years. I feel like it's going to be a much larger challenge with long term diabetics.

I hope there is a cure soon. My son is my t1 (he is 6) and this video remindid me to sign up for the Trialnet screening. I have already had my son genetics tested and sadly his markers are not known yet (they said they will do it again in a year, he is also Autistic so looking for those markers as well) Anytime I find more research I can have us be apart of I try to do it because you never know what will lead to a cure. I am a glass half full type of person and I am going to stay that way and look at how far the research has gone in my lifetime. Oh and no, the doctors at Riley did not say we would have a cure in X number of years.

I have had t1 for 23 years, c peptide is .3. There are some us even with long t1, get checked. Also, dr Bernstein says controlled blood sugars help preserve beta cells. I definitely think that is why I still have a decent amount

Very interesting but I will be dead before a cure is found. At least with no carb eating, I have prevented complications

To me, the fact that they have inhalable insulin (Afrezza) and weekly insulin (icodec, efsitora) is almost unbelievable. To me, diabetes was all about taking injections every day and at every meal. So, if they can do that, I think a cure for diabetes is a lot closer than we might think.

I find the technology is great when it works but there are plenty of times it doesn't work. I want no lost signals, no kinked filaments in the cgm, no faulty device that just stops, no apps that won't connect, no readers/apps that are 30 minutes behind being current, etc. I

I think that there will be a viable cure in your lifetime Justin, and also automation through technology that allows us to not spend so much mental energy on diabetes management.

So to my mind, what they should be working on is the breakdown in communication between the liver and the pancreas because that’s where your diabetes issue comes in the liver and the pancreas stop communicating 6:11
