VA dental care
If you qualify for VA dental care benefits, you may be able to get some or all of your dental care through VA. Find out how to get VA dental care or how to buy dental insurance if you don’t qualify.

Can I get VA dental care benefits for some or all of my dental care?
It depends on a number of factors, like your military service history and your current health and living situation. Based on these factors, VA places you into a benefits class—and you get the specific benefits assigned to that class. See the section below for more information.

Avenues to obtain VA Dental:

I have a service-connected dental disability or condition for which I receive compensation (monthly payments).

I’m a former prisoner of war.

I have one or more service-connected disabilities rated 100% disabling.

I’m unemployable (unable to work), and I get disability compensation at the 100% disabling rate due to service-connected conditions.

I served on active duty for 90 days or more during the Persian Gulf War era.

I have a service-connected noncompensable dental condition (a dental condition that you’re not getting disability payments for) or a disability that’s the result of combat wounds or service trauma.

A VA dental care provider has concluded that my dental condition is linked to a service-connected health condition and is making that condition worse.

I’m active in a 38 U.S.C. Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment program.

I get VA care or am scheduled for inpatient care for a health condition—and I need dental care for a dental issue that’s making my health condition harder to treat.

I’m signed up to get care through the Homeless Veterans Dental Program (VHA Directive 2007-039).

I currently get inpatient care in a hospital, nursing home, or other supervised homelike care setting (called domiciliary care).
How do I apply for VA dental care benefits?
You can apply online by filling out the 10-10EZ health care application.

VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)
The VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) offers discounted private dental insurance for Veterans and family members who meet certain requirements. Find out if you're eligible, and how to enroll in a plan that meets your needs and budget.

Am I eligible for the VA Dental Insurance Program?
You may be eligible for VADIP if you meet one of these requirements.

One of these must be true:

You’re a Veteran who’s enrolled in VA health care, or
You’re the current or surviving spouse or dependent child of a Veteran or service member, and you’re enrolled in the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the VA (CHAMPVA)
Note: Insurance carriers may offer separate coverage options for dependents who aren’t CHAMPVA beneficiaries.
VADIP provides coverage throughout the United States and its territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

About VA Dental Insurance Program benefits and how to enroll
Why might I want to buy private dental insurance through VADIP as a Veteran?
While some Veterans enrolled in VA health care are eligible for free dental care from our providers, many are not. Others may be eligible for free care for some, but not all, of their dental needs.

If you’re not eligible for free VA dental care, VADIP can help you buy private dental insurance at a reduced cost.

If you’re eligible for free VA care for some of your dental needs, you can buy a VADIP plan if you want added dental insurance. Signing up for VADIP won’t affect your ability to get free VA dental care.

What types of dental care does VADIP cover, and how much will it cost?
VADIP plans cover many common dental procedures. These may include:

Diagnostic services
Preventive dental care
Root canals and other services to manage oral health problems and restore function (called endodontic or restorative services)
Dental surgery
Emergency dental care
The costs for your coverage will depend on the insurance company and plan you choose.

Based on your plan, you’ll pay:

The full insurance premium for each individual on your plan
Any required copays when you get care

How do I enroll in a VADIP plan?
Once you’ve chosen a Delta Dental or MetLife VADIP plan, you can enroll online:

After you enroll, you can also use your insurance provider’s website to manage your plan and benefits online.

I have the condition you mentioned perfectly. I have severe GERD as a result of esophageal cancer. The PACT act helped quite a bit because of the burn pit situation. I was with the 1ST CAV in Saudi Arabia living next to burn pits for 9 mos. I did get treated for the cancer and am ok now. The operation removed a little of my stomach and 4 inches of my esophagus where the cancerous tumors were found. Now I will have severe GERD attacks until I die. Along with a few other conditions like diarrhea and constipation. I have had teeth removed due to the acid that comes up into the rear of my mouth almost daily. I downloaded two court cases off the VA website that confirmed what you said about service connected conditions. I took these to my doctor, the dental clinic and finally to Patient Affairs. I got shot down every step of the way. None of them would even look at the court cases from the veterans that won their full dental at less than 100% because they won their court cases. One of the cases was EXACTLY what my GERD condition is. Where can I take this now? PLEASE HELP.

First, Thank you for all the information you have shared with your videos.

I’m rated at 90% and enrolled in VA’s VR&A Chapter 31 program. 3 months ago, I lost a filling. My case manger submitted a request for me to be seen by Battle Creek VA dental. It took over 2 months for me to get an appointment with them (This was in June 2023). They took an X-Ray and then told me that they were only allowed to do a tooth extraction (if needed) or cosmetic work on the front teeth to make them look good for a job interview. They also told me that this was due to a change in rules a few years ago. So, the VA is very limited in what they can do for VR&A Chapter 31 program veterans.

Would love to see a couple videos on being a fiduciary for a 100% disabled Veteran,
Specifically a back pay check is coming for about a year, need to know if I can reimburse for the bills paid back to that start date? Such as rent medical and day to day stuff?

I experienced blunt force trauma in service and it took 15 years to get dental. I was eventually provided extensive restoration ( braces, crowns and a retainer) and then denied dental except for # 8/9. I guess 2a . I continue to have issues w/ cracked molar and TMJ and filled but thinking It is a long road. Should I file for 2ndary or get legal representation and file for disability?
