VA dental care
If you qualify for VA dental care benefits, you may be able to get some or all of your dental care through VA. Find out how to get VA dental care or how to buy dental insurance if you don’t qualify.

Can I get VA dental care benefits for some or all of my dental care?
It depends on a number of factors, like your military service history and your current health and living situation. Based on these factors, VA places you into a benefits class—and you get the specific benefits assigned to that class. See the section below for more information.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides comprehensive
dental care to Veterans who meet eligibility standards; however,
the benefit is not available to many Veterans. VA would like all
Veterans and beneficiaries to have access to good oral health.
Good oral health is more than just a nice smile or ability to chew
favorite foods – it impacts a person’s overall health throughout
his or her life.
VA’s Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) offers enrolled Veterans
and beneficiaries of VA’s Civilian Health and Medical Program
(CHAMPVA) the opportunity to purchase dental insurance at a
reduced cost.
VADIP was established as a pilot program by the Caregivers
and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2012. The pilot
program, which began Jan. 1, 2014, and ended Jan. 31, 2017,
assessed the feasibility and advisability of providing a premiumbased dental insurance plan to eligible individuals. The VA
Dental Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2016, signed into law
July 29, 2016, allowed VA to continue VADIP until December 31,
2021. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs Expiring
of Authorities Act of 2021 eliminated the termination date
of December 31, 2021. VA will be able to continue dental
insurance services indefinitely.
VA has selected Delta Dental of California and MetLife to offer
private insurance coverage for VADIP. For more information,
the providers directly: Delta at 1-855-370-3303 and Metlife at
For more 1-888-310-1681.

Eligibility for VADIP
Veterans enrolled in the VA health care program and CHAMPVA beneficiaries are eligible to
participate in VADIP. Participation in VADIP does not affect Veterans’ eligibility for VA dental
services and treatment.
Dependents of Veterans, except those eligible under CHAMPVA, are not eligible for VADIP;
however, the insurance carriers may offer dependents separate coverage options.
Dental Plan Information
Coverage will be provided throughout the United States and its territories.
Multiple plan options allow participants to select a plan that provides benefits and premiums
that meet their dental needs and budget. Offered plans vary and may include diagnostic,
preventative, surgical, emergency and endodontic/restorative treatment. Each participant
will pay a fixed monthly premium for coverage, in addition to any copayments required by
his or her plan.

God bless you, sir, and all our servicemen and women. Thank you for your love of country ❤️. My husband, the veteran, has been using VA care, and we were wondering about dental benefits. You explained it so throughly.

While I was in the mental floor in the hospital I had a tooth break off. The mental health floor got me a appointment very first thing the next morning. I was only at 10% connected at that time. I learned that if they determine its an emergency there are no other questions asked. Mine was declared an emergency and I had to have three teeth pulled. It was way to late to save them and out they came. The hole time I was in the chair the doctor and assistant kept me 100% informed about everything they were doing. Believe me it took alot of shots of numbing medicine. The doctor had alot of patients and every time he hit a nerve 😤 he would stop and more medicine. My teeth were not helping very much in the doctors favor. Anyway they finally all three were out and he stitch me up. I owe the Fresno VA alot not just for dental help but also medical help, along with there mental health floor. Thanks 😊 to all that has helped me out. My % is now up to 70 hopefully heading to 100%. SGT. Adams.

How does a Vietnam VET qualify for dental. I’m currently rated at 90%. I have all sorts of conditions severe heart condition, tinnitus, neuropathy, back issues, hearing problems, diabetes. And all they tell me is you have to be 100%. I’m retired and 77yrs and would like too at least qualify for some form of bridge work. Thanks your very informative. Thank for your service.

Honestly I don’t understand why the VA withholds dental for those veterans who have “full” access to VA healthcare until they hit 100% or TDIU. Dental care is also healthcare in my opinion.

VI am a S.C. Veteran and Dental is one of my Ailments, I have Dental treatments through non-va community care, because I'm not comfortable with the Dayton, Ohio V.A. Dental, and the Dentist wrote me an RX. for a " Waterpic"( which I've had 2 before), and now, the Dayton V.A. does not honor it!! What can I do??

are there any options for a vet that is currently sitting at 10%. Ive been fighting the good fight for years now to get other conditions claimed and am in the process of waiting now. but my GI issues(Lots of vomiting and other things) have cause extensive damage to my teeth and in the last month 5 have broken off. They are very painful and the VA just doesn't care. Ive not been able to work due to the GI issues. Not being able to work means no dental insurance. Im hurting very badly. nothing is infected yet but only time will tell on that.

If a medical condition is effecting the body doesn't the VA have a duty to resolve that. If i have an Ulcer they will treat it. It only logical to me that if someone vomits repeatly multiple times a day several days a week that the stomach acid would cause tooth decay. Wouldnt that need to be addressed? Im not asking for a beautiful smile I just want the pain to end. Pull the teeth out please for the love of god end this pain. I can use a damn blender to process my food but i cant take much more of this pain.

I see my Primary care doctor tomorrow and I'm going to ask her for something for the pain. I cant keep taking tylenol the way i am. Sorry I haven't slept much the last week. Im very much on edge. the soonest i can see a regular dentist that i don't have the money for is the 23rd of this month smh. weeks more of pain.

If I apply to be reimbursed will this open a nightmare affecting my TDIU.

I only needed minor dental work when I first started this battle with the VA 55 years ago. I was awarded IU P&T on Feb 5th. 2023...so I am eligible for Dental at the VA... but after 55 years of fighting them, I now need a full set of teeth.
Can you tell me what services the Dental Department at the VA provides for US 100% Rated Veterans ? Do they do Implant dentistry ? I do have an appointment set up for early next month... just curious as to what I might be able to look forward to !
Thanks in advance !

I’ve been given a favorable decision on my teeth that were damaged on a jump but when I go to the VA they do not cover it and I went to the VSO at the Daytona Beach VA and he asked if he could get a copy on my decision letter and I haven’t heard anything. How can I get this done? I am currently 60 % service connected.
