thank you for sharing this...its actually something that has been bothering me lately.  i am a new nurse at my first rn job on a med/surg floor.  i had a patient admitted into my care and it was not five minutes that this patient arrived onto the unit that she miscarried a baby.  :(  it was awful...my preceptor and i were starting our assessment when we looked down there all we find is...miscarried baby. i felt like i was going to be sick, i had to just leave the room and cry it out a little bit.  i was so ashamed that i had reacted this way....i hope i can hold it together if it were ever to happen again but its good to know that even cvicu nurses are not always stone cold when it comes to death.

I worked in a major city CVICU for 12 years, by then I'd seen enough and moved on to cardiac step down. I've worked in various ICU's and at times, CV has got to be the hardest with all the equipment used to keep patient's alive. Props to you for taking on the challenge, sounds like you're doing a great job.

Hi my mum passed away in icu in may of this year I wish all the nurses I have meet where as compassion about there job . My mum was a nurse for 38 years and I know she felt let down by the health service in what mum belived in . If my mum had listened to you she would of thought what a great nurse you are . Thank you

Thanks for sharing your experience! I went through the same thing recently and it was pretty hard. The only difference was that I was on a MedSurg unit and the family did not expect the patient to pass. The family was in the room when the patient passed away. The patient was a DNR, so when his respirations and the test of his vital signs started to decline the patient asked for us to put him on comfort measures, shortly after he passed. The really hard part about the whole situation was that over the past couple of week the patient was there I got to know the patient and family.. Thanks again for sharing.

One of the nurses on my floor that I was doing Clinicals told us that if one of your patients dies and it doesn't have some sort of effect on you, you're in the wrong profession...so true

I remember asking this question on your twitter a while back. It's a difficult issue, but I like how you professionally handled it. Great video, I hope you keep making them.

Thank you for speaking about this. It's such a sensitive issue, especially for new nurses/nursing students, and it always helps to hear how others have handled it and what they struggled with. God  bless!

Thanks for sharing that. Doctors need more nurses like you who understand. You are a good example to me to be the best nurse that I can be.

I've been blessed because I've seen about 6 deaths in the one year I've worked at an alzheimers/dementia facility. I was blessed because I got to pray, hopefully, some of them into heaven. I've heard the last thing to go is their hearing, so I made sure I would bless them figuring these might be the last words they hear. Some were a little more sad than others, but over all I think I handle death very well. Isn't that a blessing?

Thanks for being willing to talk honestly about this subject.  It is definitely something that is on my mind as a soon to be Nursing student and something I will inevitably have to deal with someday.  It sounds like you handled the situation very well.

You're a beast dude. I just started fundamentals and am thrown back by the difference in study strategies this term. got my first C today on a quiz after A's on every test in every class like patho, micro, chem, stats, anatomy. Any study tips to learn how to dissect nursing questions using ADPIE or what ever method students use would be appreciated. I enjoyed listening to your story and subscribed. Keep the vids coming! lol

I feel it is a privilege to be with the patient when they pass.  I make sure they are comfortable and pass peacefully and never alone if at all possible.
