This is an extreme rounded off fastener situation. I will be doing more testing on other types of rounded off fasteners as well as using them in every day situations. STAY TUNED!

I bought 3 sets
Deep and short 3/8 drive standard
1/4 drive deep metric absolutely love it
My tool guy walked to the shop bolt bin all grade 10 bolts jacked it up with a adjustable wrench in the vise . I removed all of them I highly recommend these for people who deal with messed up nuts and bolts

Their tight tolerances are built around a hex fastener, therefore you need some part of that original fastener intact for it to work properly. In the case of the FDX sockets, they grab close to the center of the flat part of the hex. In order for them to work, you need a flat portion of the fastener to still be there for the socket to grasp. Grinding down each corner AND side of the fastener now takes that fastener down to a smaller size and now your tight tolerances that the sockets are designed around are no longer there.

You should use a harbor freight one size too big to round off

Thanks and great video, I normally push down on a socket when wrenching fasteners, especially when using a deep. It may have made a difference in this test.

I’m looking to get a set of hex, torx, and triple square socket sets. What are the best ones to get and the most commonly used

What happened to the days of grabbing a socket (cheap one) and pounding it on with a hammer and taking it off? Or is the day of the farmer wrenching dead?

I think they are more designed for fastners that someone rounded off with a open ended wrench type scenario

Is that when your Snap-on sockets Bell mouth and strip out Nuts and Bolts. Then you try your chromies and they crack. I'm finding grey pneumatic and offshore sockets made with S2 Steel are stronger

Can you get the sae set and see if it might be closer to the size after you round the fastener

Could you try a flank drive plus socket but one size down ? Save you buying the FDX?

I keep considering a set of these. Just can’t decide if they’ll be shallow, semi deep, or deep. Tempted to just get semi deep as a compromise size.

How often do I see them rounded off? Oh that just depends on whether I tried to use a 12pt first 😆

Ok I have a dumb question. Are the tolerances on these too tight for comfortable every days use? If not would you suggest using this set as an every day set for bolts that are perfectly fine?
