At the Center for Prevention, one of our goals is to reduce the overall number of people using commercial tobacco, and we’re especially focused on reducing rates for people who are experiencing the greatest health inequities.

Commercial tobacco companies have a long history of aggressively target low-income people, LGBTQ communities and certain ethnic groups in Minnesota. Because of commercial tobacco’s harmful targeting, these populations show higher commercial tobacco use and higher rates of smoking-related disease.

In these three episodes of the State We’re In, we dive deep into the history of commercial tobacco marketing tactics and the impact on the Native American community, especially in Minnesota. This series was inspired by our work with community partners and the TPT documentary, Reclaiming Sacred Tobacco.
