The north sea is actually very shallow for a sea and thats why its so dangerous, the shallow water allows bigger waves to form from currents and tide, in deeper seas these waves would just be gentle swells but in the north sea the sea bed pushes them upwards meaning they have higher peaks and can even break like waves on the beach but giant and in the middle of the sea making sailing very hazardous

The North Sea is actually VERY shallow compared to most seas! The North Sea is ~300 feet on average, whereas seas like the Black Sea and the Red Sea are more than 30 times that -- closer to 10k ft deep on average.

In any case, a deeper sea is not always more dangerous and certainly does not correlate to higher wages for working there. Part of the reason for rough wave patterns on the North Sea is that the water is particularly shallow.

I crossed the north sea in 2005.
Side stabilizers were disengaged to make for better time. Many people couldn't handle sea sickness, about 30 people were quarantined for madness...it was the summertime. The North Sea has definitely taken souls.
