Macro filter: how and when to use it?

In this video I'm showing you how to use a macro filter or macro lens, also known as close-up filter. I purchased a macro filter from Hoya. It's a Hoya HMC +4 diopters macro lens. I tested this macro lens with my Fujifilm X-T30 and Fujinon XF 18-55 mm lens at two extreme focal lengths. In my review of the macro filter I show that you can get 1.75 x to 2 x magnification with it and it does not alter the image quality or light metering. In my opinion this macro filter is a very nice addition and highly recommended.

Love close up filters since it is a hobby.

Always nice to drop by and hang out with your calm intelligent personality. Boy, you keep those nails short...super close up also displays camera shake...unless you're out in that sun. There's a lot to talk about with closeup work.

You can use a reverse ring to mount your lens the other way around.

my 43-86 mm nikkor 1979 lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.2 meters which is extremely impractical when i want to get close up shots.

buying a separate lens to get closer seemed pointless and a waste of money, so i decided to cheat.

i bought two magnifying filters. one is a +10 and a +2.

when i want to do macro, i use the +10 filter (minimum focus distance is now 12 cm).
when i want to get close, i use the +2 filter (minimum focus distance is now 37-50 cm, no infinity though).

in other words, a magnifying filter allows you to do two things:

1. macro
2. get closer by reducing focus distance on the lens, which is especially helpful if your lens has an unusable focus distance like mine (1.2 m)

How do these impact your minimum focus distance/infinity? Like could you leave this on your lens full time? Let's use 85mm as an example. They usually have a minimum focus distance of around 3ft, could you effectively reduce that and still maintain normal functionality of the lens?

Hi Tom, do you think such a filter would work well with a Canon RF 24 105mm F4? The filter size is 77mm for this lens and the Maximum magnification for this lens is 0.24. Would you recommend me to go for the Hoya close up + 4 or a lower value (maybe + 2?) Do you think that this filter can be used with a step down ring to adapt it to a lens with a smaller filter size, or this would cause distortion or other unwanted effect?

what magnification size would you reccomend for a 24-70 is x 10 too excessive ?
