I know it’s for emergency’s but the problem is that when I’m in a situation where I break a chain the last thing I need is a weaker chain.

Cody, I gotta call this one out for safety.

Some finer points of cold shut links are:. 1. They are only designed to be used with grade 30 aka proof coil chain, they are not suitable for applications that require stronger chain.
2. Always size the link to be equal or higher to the rating of the chain, when the appropriate link is used and set properly it should not affect the strength of the complete chain. The link is usually a nominal size larger than the chain e.g. a 5/16" link is used for 1/4" chain with the link rated at 1300# and the chain at 1250#
3. It's super ultra mega important to fully close the link until the long sides are parallel. You then must peen the tail down like a rivet to lock the link closed. When the link isn't closed fully the resulting delta shape does not retain the full strength of the link. If you fail to peen the tail into place, it can pull back out snapping the chain. Leading to a transcendence of the physical

For those of you questioning the vice, It's normally done with a big hammer and your preferred ASO in the field.

*** Also worth mentioning that twin clevis links are another great alternative that are reusable and come in both grade 43 and grade 70 flavors for when you really need to send it.

Not wanting them to see my shame, and reaffirm their belief that I was not good enough for their daughter I was able to complete this emergency repair! As long as my "emergency vice" is handy I would have used my "emergency 32oz hammer" and mushroomed the protruding end of the repair link to help keep it from pulling apart.

If you are at the bench vise, the welder is nearby. I just weld a couple links togethr. The screw links, are more " field friendly".
