Totally agree Emma, reading has to be enjoyable. No point trying to read something where you have to look up words every few sentences.

Reading might not help us to speak English directly. But reading does help indirectly to improve our English Speaking as we can learn a lot of new words by reading.

Hey Emma!
Reading books written in English is why I started learning English. I got super into a series of books, Game of Thrones so I began to learn English by reading books, from books for kids to magazines. Finally feeling confident enough, I started reading the books a few months ago. I could barely put them down while reading.
You're absolutely right. It is worthwhile.

Thanks Emma for sharing this video with us.
Frankly, I was mainly reading scientific textbooks in English while I was studying my master program. The language used in those books was sophisticated and sometimes it was really difficult to understand the context. I believe this experience somehow made an impact on my reading habit. I just didn't want to read books in English anymore.
However, after watching your today's video I think that I need to change my mind and look at your recommended ones in the description box but first I want to try an audio book which you've suggested as well.
May I also take this opportunity and congratulate you with the International Women's Day! Let you be surrounded with the life full of love and bright moments! You're awesome! 🌹💖😊

my English level is upper intermediate, I really like to read motivational books in my own native language, but I decided to start reading books in English too. so I went to a bookstore and I looked for motivational books there were a lot of motivational books that I really wanted to read, but I chose the low volume book to not become boring for me, finally, the name of the book is 100 ways to motivate yourself. it is an amazing book for improving English and encourage yourself to read more books in English. I really enjoy reading it, but actually I dont have any kinda dictionary with my self during reading that book. because I guess the meaning of the words from the sentence. I really recommend this books for those people who like reading motivational book and they are looking for English books.

I put this video on 2.0 speed, and I could understand everything you said. HAHAHA! Well, I'm reading some books. I've already read the giver, the curious incident of the dog in the night time, the perks of being a wallflower, harry potter books, etc. The more I read easier it gets, and I've been noticing an improvement in my vocabulary and understanding. Sometimes I forget that I'm reading in English, it becomes so easy that it seems Portuguese. Some people say that to be able to speak, we should speak, and they're right. But to speak English, we only need two things: put the words in the correct order and pronounce them right. In other words, if you're a person who has read a lot of books, one day you will start to think automatically in English, some times the sentences will stick in your mind. By this point, if you can understand English, I'm sure that you are capable of speaking English. I make many mistakes, but I can speak and transmit my thoughts without trouble.

I completely agree. Because reading is slower paced than real time conversations, it can help students learn proper grammar and expand their vocabulary. Great lesson as always Emma! :)

Happy Women's Day to you Emma :) Personally ı really love reading. ı can say that reading is what ı live for. The kinds that ı generally prefer to read are history, detective, world's classics. itinerary, biography and fantastic fictions like Harry Potter. Furthermore, one of the things that ı learn foreign languages is to be able to read the books in their original languages. Reading is also really essential to learn new vocabularies, expressions and catch the patterns of living language. For me, the more you read the better you speak. it is the same for your mother tongue. ı usually read British and French newspapers like the Guardian. the İndependent, The Sun, Le Monde, Le Figaro and 20 Minutes for reading practice.

I always read with text marker handy and I'm consequently jotting al new words in an Excel sheet. This has tremendously improved my verbal skills.

The INPUT hypothesis makes a claim that may seem unacceptable for the most of learners is spoken fluency is not acquired by practicing talking but by understanding INPUT of listening and reading .

Acquisition occurs, according to the input hypothesis, when learners understand input's meaning, not when they focus on form and produce output.

When I first started to learn English I was eleven.I was playful and loved to watch films for kids.I was really fond of watching the film named "Matilda".It was translated into Uzbek, I mean into my native language. Then one day I saw that book in the library in English.I can't describe my feelings at that time.I read the book with great interest.Even my level was elementary and there were many new, difficult tenses and words for me I could understand the whole book.Because I started reading English books earlier and already watched the FILM .
There was reading marathon in our language centre. So I tried to do my best.
As you've just said reading can help us to improve our language skills dramatically.I absolutely agree with you ☺
