Lubricating screws | DIY Quick tip

A quick tip when driving screws into timber is to lubricate them first, this reduces friction and makes the screws much easier to drive. This can save time on jobs and also means less work for the machine that is driving the screws in.

A teflon spray with quick drying carrier works nearly as well as grease with less mess. You can spray an entire box of screws at one time and use them months later.

I think this is an OK tip. For quality work I'd drill a pilot hole, but for such as decking and especially the frame screws I think it would take some of the load off the drill and probably conserve battery power as well.

Just stumbled across your video! I am not a carpenter, so you simple idea is totally a "why didn't I think of that" moment! Thanks so much!

If you anticipate eventually having to remove the screw, then some mineral oin on the thread can only help, by preventing corrosion as well as lubricating the thread on the way out.

Looks familiar ...

As a kid my woodshop teacher used to use wax on the threads.

30 odd years ago a carpenter showed me how rubbing a long screw on a candle made lighter work of screwing it in. I use a piece of beeswax these days - good tip ☺

I was having trouble with the last inch or so of some wood screws and wondered if lubricating them first would help. Thanks for confirming :)

I wish I'd seen this video yesterday. I'm going to uninstall all of the 3x2s I fitted yesterday afternoon so I can take advantage of this great tip..
