I think the Winter Soldier might be my favorite MCU character. They did an amazing job with his story arc + Sebastian plays him so well.

Joe & Anthony Russo talked about this in response to people complaining that The Winter Soldier wasn't in enough of the marketing for the Winter Soldier film. They explained that the term applies just as much to Captain America as it did to Bucky, with Cap being the epitome of a Winter Soldier.

I'll always be thankful to Ed Brubaker for creating The Winter Soldier, he created my favorite comic book character.

having just watched civil war, I gotta say.... the interpretation of being the people fighting for freedom even when it isn't easy, even when the 'summer soldiers' are now against you. that fits perfectly.

I think they're going to use Bucky as a character to reflect the horrors of war and how deeply it affects people. If anything, I'm hoping he's portrayed as a man who's only ever known war crime atrocities, and is willingly to fight for peace. Kind-of like an anti-war advocate, I guess. That'd be pretty wicked.

I think Brubaker singlehandedly made me a Cap fan.

Grey is the color of winter, just as it is the color of the morality of war. I like the idea of the winter soldier being the one who is the patriot through thick and thin. In the end, war encompasses uncivilized acts brought forth by "civilized" nations in times of conflict. These are things that average civilians will never understand despite however many war movies they watch. To me, the name "the winter soldier" encompasses all these things. Fighting the fight despite the judgments of those privileged enough to sit back and judge from the comfort of their arm chairs, just so those sitting in judgement can enjoy that same privilege. There is nothing in this life more honored and at the same time disdained. Such a great villain/ side kick for Captain America. The fact that a character with as much integrity as cap is willing to put all on the line for him shows the heart of a veteran and an American at the same time. Truly great character writing.

I always figured it was a pun or reference to Cold Warrior, aka a combatant in the Cold War. If not, I'm totally using Cold Warrior in my comics.

Over all I think I Marvel has a good range of soldier character types. You have Captain America, the man who is meant to be ideal soldier both in physical performance and in conduct. Then there is the Punisher: a man who went through hell only to loose everything anyway. So he sets out to fight an endless war. Falcon (at least in the MCU) is a normal soldier who has gone through some hardship, but for the most part has remained intact and strives to do what's honorable. Bucky is the soldier that is a pawn of the commanding powers. He's someone hasn't had much choice in life.

Such a fantastic history to a name of a character I truly enjoy. I loved his evolution in the comics and I can't wait to see his growth on screen.

I assumed it was a reference to the 'nuclear winter' that was anticipated during the Cold War since Russia was a major player during that time and Bucky was brainwashed and used mainly during that period.

Gotta love Scott AND DK; you get two hot guys talking about comics and their history - why are people complaining??

Don't you think it's ironic how the winter solider meaning is someone who speaks up about the war crimes committed, but the civil war event in the cinematic universe is about how cap doesn't want Bucky accountable for the things he's done?

Previous iterations of the name were: The Ice Cube Soldier, The Fridge Soldier, The Popsicle Soldier and Soldier on The Rocks.
