Now that the RWD version of the Tesla Model Y is available in the USA, with the $7,500 tax credit applied for those who qualify, you can purchase a BRAND NEW Model Y for under $38K! But what type of battery type is in this RWD version and is it a good deal, or is it worth the extra cost to go with the Long Range or Performance version?

Hands down your videos are the best at comparing the different models’ range, price, and what makes sense. Your explanation is very clear, tables are easy to read, and length of video is not too long.

There is one big difference in the rear wheel drive verses the AWD, in cold climates the AWD has the two motors to help with battery preconditioning (these are run inefficiently to create excess heat) in cold weather something that I did witness in Canada on the last 2 winter long distance trips I took, at -18Deg.C. the battery preconditioning only started about 35 minutes before arrival of the planned supercharger, something that may not happen with just on motor contributing to battery preconditioning. So the second motor is not just useful for traction but also regen in enabled on both axles again making it more efficient when doing a lot of elevation changes ( 4 mountain passes) in my Vancouver to Calgary trips one way.axle.

Thank you for the videos on this model! I just took delivery a few days any of a 2024 model y rwd, and so far, after 426 miles, I’m loving it. We could only really afford it due to the federal and state rebates, so we are very appreciative. I used it for Uber for the first time today and the range was just fine. I did supercharge after several hours of driving and i was impressed with how fast it charged to 80% from 10%. We received 10k in free supercharging miles!! I really hope you make more videos in this model.

I have the LFP RWD model 3 and the max charge rate is ~175kW at very low states of charge. Showing one of the RWD model Y examples charging up to 215kW at 20% is more evidence that it may be a different battery than the RWD model 3. I also don’t believe the LFP batteries currently qualify for the IRA tax credit, and the RWD model Y does qualify. It all seems to point to what you’re saying.

Thank you for this video!! Not many folks are talking about the new RWD Model-Y. I also felt the RWD M-Y was a software locked long-range battery. I bought my Model-Y RWD back in December and it's absolutely superb. RWD is the best deal overall in my opinion. No regrets at all.

Another potential benefit of the software limitation is that in the future, Tesla may allow you to pay for an upgrade to the full battery capacity. This would effectively allow you to convert your standard range to a long range !

Jon, what I don't like about the Austin Rear Wheel Model Y is: I can never top balance the battery cells, because I can never charge the pack to a true 100% SOC. I like to do that once a year. Makes the SOC readout remain accurate.

Another difference is that the Model Y RWD no longer comes with the premium sound system.

I bought my RWD M~Y December 2023 and learned that it has a lithium-ion battery. I have been very pleased with the overall performance of the car as well as the rate of battery charge.

Listed price between 19" RWD and AWD on their website is only $3000 off. (AWD is 47, 990, while RWD is 44, 990)
So, I am not sure how you got a $5000 difference between them in your chart.

Commenters: What about the sound system, that’s what’s important

Why would they recommend a charge limit of 80% then?

If you live in a snowy climate, AWD beats Rear wheel drive all day, every day in driving in snow.

In shopping for a Model Y this morning, the stated range on the RWD is 320, AWD, 310. Is this b/c it’s no longer software limited? Anyone else seeing this?

@cleanerwatt my Nov 2024 production 2025 MY LR RWD comes with 337 mile range and I do think that the actual battery capacity is around 370 - 375 miles. Essentially this is the same battery pack slated for the upcoming juniper upgrade.

Your final chart was off, in that the AWD includes almost double the speakers whereas you showed the two models having the same speaker setup.
