So, in American English, there is a very similar part of this. One would be "Give it to me now!", as compared to "Can I please have this?". I think this correlates well. Let me know if I am wrong . Still learning Deutsche. This is how I would view it though.

I'm very familiar with both terms, but I've never actually heard anyone explain the difference between them before.

Intuitively/ through exposure to natural language use, I guess I think of 'bekommen' as the more passive/ neutral term (where "to get" might equate to "to be given", or "to receive"), while I think I generally use 'kriegen' in more of an active way (where "to get" might also mean "to take"). It's good to get insight from a native speaker though :D
