CushCore MTB Tire Insert Install | Protect your mountain bike rims and corner faster!
The CushCore product seems very impressive, but will it really work?

After a pretty cool #BikeChat with Adam from CushCore, RGMTB was sent a set of CushCore inserts for testing. The initial look and feel is very positive. Though the install was a bit tough, the final result was well worth the work. Now it's time for the testing!

Regular Guy Mountain Biking is made up of a great group of folks that enjoy the sport of mountain biking. The crew has a mix of skill levels and we all are very down to earth. As a good friend in the group always says, “We start together and we end together”.
Other than planning out rides and trying to get more people involved in the sport we create videos generally based on mountain biking. Some of these videos are product reviews and some are basic tips and tricks.
If there is anything you would like to learn more about regarding the sport please feel free to post some comments or contact us directly via one of our social media channels :-) Always check out our 2017 Bike Chat videos!

I have never heard of this Cush Core before. It will be interesting to hear your comments how those tires ride.

It's actually pretty reasonable work taking 20-25mins per tire and you manage it easily with just good quality plastic levers. However it's not going to happen without twisting these or official cushcore installation instructions a bit. First thing is to install just the cushcore on the rim and then stretch the cushcore a bit by pulling it. Then take cushcore off from the the rim and install one side of the tire on the rim (as you would be doing std tubeless setup) . Lubricate the cushcore and the inner surface of the tire with soapy water. Start installing the cushcore. Use couple of zip ties to keep it on place. After getting the cushcore fully on Cut the zip ties. Check that the 'bedding line' of the already mounted side of the tire is not visible. If not push the tire in between cushcore and rim until the bedding line disappears. This is crucial or otherwise you will need those big guns and some meditation. Start mounting the other side of the tire by using the following movement. First pull the cushcore towards you (with you fingers) so that it lifts a bit off from the rim allowing you to push the tire in with a rolling motion. Make sure that the bedding line sinks below the edge after each roll before progressing. If doing this carefully getting the final bit of the tire on the rim is not much harder than in std tubeless setup. Before trying to seat tire ' unroll' the tire on both sides to get the bedding line closer the edge of the rim. No need to get it visible though. Lubricate the bedding area and blow the tire on.

I have these and I like them so far. I do wish they had longer valve stems since they are a little short for my NOX Farlow rims.

Looks cool. Can't wait to here your thoughts on them.

I like this system but I really question the valve stems. Couldn't you simply drill a hole through the cushcore then line up the hole with regular stems? Great video! thanks!

This concept is very interesting, Gene. Did you weigh the setup you had vs the weight with the different tires and CushCore installed? I imagine this setup is heavier but if you have numbers, I'd be interested in seeing them.

I look forward to your long-term report! At this time, this looks like a very expensive product for a problem that doesn't present itself often enough to be worth it in my case, but I still like the idea.

Cool concept! Similar to that of R/C rock clawing trucks. Not nearly as big of a pain as mounting a tubular tire though!

Love these videos of you trying out cool new products!
Love the unboxing and everything but wished you would have shown us the struggle of putting the tires on though.

Great vid Gene. Very anxious to see you and @thephilkmetz riding these and giving your opinions on em. Weight will definitely probably be the biggest issue but if performance is better should be worth the handoff for me.

Curious to see if they really live up to giving a better ride with those tires. I also wonder if they'd get you out of the woods if you had a bad puncture, seems possible to ride on them with no air.

Gene, was there too much "regular guy cussing" on the tire fitting to the rim to prevent showing that section of the video? :-)... the magic of editing and then the follow up challenging description makes me wonder :-) Great videos

I want to buy a set Gene. Did they give you a promo code or anything? Be nice to let them know I'm picking them up because I saw them here.

Love to see a comparison vs putting some pool noodles in the tires perhaps on a Fat Bike

Is it normal to have a tiny bit or. hair play of clearance after installing a cassette gear 11 x 50T . The hair play i am talking about is when i hold the 50t gear and move it back and forth towards the spoke and towards the hanger there is a very tiny bit of play or clearance which i think i need to put in a spacer at the back of the cassette gears. Is this normal???

I cringed at the steel tire levers, don't damage your rims!
What are your thoughts from riding this system?

mikethomson

I used nothing more than my fingers and a small tire lever to flip the last 3 inches of the tire over did this with a new tire I laid out in the sun to make it more pliable no soapy water took me about 5 minutes total to install you just gotta go back and forth working the bead in

Does it come in different sizes for different rim widths?
