Randall Standridge is considered one of the best “younger” concert band composers and his works are not only musically outstanding, but the emotional connection behind them reach far beyond what the ear hears. But he has done something few composers have ever done. In 2021 he was asked to create a work addressing mental illness. This extremely difficult work is dedicated to his parents and is a musical depiction of his Mother’s long-time struggle with mental illness and how his father, he and his brother lived within that as a family. He knew from his own personal struggles
that there was a need to address mental health among high school and middle schools and he created the UnBroken project which has, so far, five compositions for levels from very young band to college level. In addition, the project offers the free rental of this work, UnBroken to college, military and community bands. He says, “I live with depression. I am not afraid to say this. However, too many suffer in silence, shame and fear. We must tear down these walls and normalize discussions about mental health issues. We owe it to each other."
