Great explanation! I love the moniker “The Golden 40, ” it has definitely been my target for gaming on the Deck. It’s an excellent compromise while still giving an uplift over 30 fps, and even older, less demanding titles that might otherwise run flawlessly at 60 fps feel great at The Golden 40.

40FPS was sweet spot for me in terrible optimized PC games for years. With 120Hz monitor/TV it's perfect sweet spot.
40FPS/40Hz for Steam Deck is like best idea ever. So much better compared to 30FPS.

Thanks for the tips, but could you please consider captioning any game footage with the name of the title. There are a couple of games which looked intriguing (3:40 being the main one) and it'd be nice to be able to look them up myself.

EDIT: Discovered the comment (thanks for that), but still think in video or at least using the description would better.

Well said. Honestly 40hz mode has changed my entire perspective on framerate and frame pacing and game feel.

You shouldn't forget to mention some games have physics tied to framerate and refresh rate, which can really mess with the experience.

11-12 watts is perfect. From my expirence 9 or 21 watts give the fair performance but 11 to 15 doesn’t. At 12 you get best battery with performance that’s 1-2 fps off
