AI is dramatically changing the way we interact with software. So for this episode of Design Review, YC General Partner Aaron Epstein sat down with Raphael Schaad, the founder and designer of Cron (now Notion Calendar), to critique some groundbreaking AI user interfaces. Together they’ll review a wide variety of examples, from agents and adaptive UI to video prompts and realistic voice APIs, all in an effort to get a glimpse of how AI is changing the future of software.

Perfect timing! Regarding latency, I believe Don Norman in The Design of Everyday Things talks about how it isn’t how responsive the app is to user input that matters most, but consistency and setting expectations. I think for voice apps and prompts using extended thinking models, as long as the UI communicates to the user what is happening and why users will be OK with slower responses if the output is valuable to them. In the example of the voice only demo, perhaps as it’s generating a response a sound is played letting users know it’s working on the request. Low latency is less important as long as users know their prompt is being processed.

I didn’t see anything in the UI here that was new. Video games are really incredible UI systems and they blow all of this out of the water.

Rarely have I encountered such effective, engaging and clear communicators as Aaron and Raphael. Richard Feynman must be smiling.

Hey! VAPI user here - it actually does pause if you interrupt it, theres a setting that allows you to enable that, maybe they disabled that for the demo or this could be recorded before they may have released that feature

I'm a simple man. Whenever I see Raphael in a video, I just click.

6:59 I find calls with support centers based across the world can experience delays in conversations. This due to the IP routing of calls across the internet. So this AI demo still felt like that.

The way AI interfaces are evolving is wild—adaptive UI, video prompts, voice APIs… It’s not just about automation anymore, it’s about experience. At JetSoftPro, a software development service, we’re always looking at how intuitive AI design can transform user interactions. Great breakdown in this video!

Love this review! I usually browse the AI-UX interaction library for inspiration; it has best practices too, like "add example prompts" 13:40
