Behringer cloning: internet rage
Warmaudio cloning: internet claiming "wow. So cool and innovative"

Behringer has always said we don't care about straight copying Boss and other companies products. But this new line they have now is actually respectable. A straight slap in the face to cork sniffers. Hope they stack up.

No one seems to realise that Behringer offers three years of warranty

I truly do not see all the hype around a "Klon" pedal...be it the $$$$ original or a less expensive copy ....but if I ever had the desire to get such a pedal, spending $69 is spot on... Bravo Behringer !

I’ve been making this argument against the Behringer haters for years: They are taking Zero business away from original companies with their clones because it’s not the same demographic of customers. The person buying a $69 Klon clone is never going to have been the type to shell out $5000 for the original. The person buying the $499 Behringer minimoog was never going to have shelled out $5000+ for a Moog. It’s just ridiculous to think that Behringer is hurting these other brands’ sales. I would even argue that the companies that are doing more to steal business from original companies are the ones that make “near copies”, market them as better quality as the original, and charge similar prices as the original. There are hundreds of companies doing this with “Telecaster style” and “Strat style” guitars and everyone just applauds them.

I got bored waiting to see what this really had to do with Klon.

Everyone always talks about this plastic cover but I've never heard anyone say their Behringer pedal broke. If it didn't work, Behringer would have stopped using plastic a long time ago.

I'm an American who moved to Kenya. Although I have a lot of high end gear, including from current and previous endorsement deals, I spent a few hundred dollars on a bunch of Behringer gear before I left. I now have an arsenal of pedals and recording gear that sounds amazing.

I'm actually going on a European tour early next year, taking some of my Behringer gear. It's solidly built, sounds great, and doesn't kill my wallet if it's stolen.

I've had a Behringer 7-band EQ in my arsenal for 10 years or more. It can make a great overdrive pedal in a pinch, and it's bright yellow. That makes it much easier to see on a dark stage. Just be an adult and treat your gear like a rational human being, and you'll be golden. Just play the damned instrument as much as you possibly can.

I think Berhinger just realised that people generally can't tell the difference between an Axe FX and a Zoom 1010 and so they ran with it....

Behringer is so healthy for the music equipment landscape. This type of competition is exactly what was needed to bring the biggest names in music gear back to earth. They are far too disconnected from musicians needs and also the economy of music

Makes me realise all of my drive pedals are more or less clones. We use those original pedals to describe categories.

It’s not just fx pedals with Behringer, also recording gear, rack equipment, everything. I used to pour scorn on them but now my finances have gone downhill and I really like them. My daughter is learning the guitar and she is getting a fuzz bender for Christmas. We could never afford the real thing, so Behringer are going to make a little girl happy when she plays in her band, can only be a good thing!

Protecting a circuit design with a patent is typically not possible and would also be a lot more expensive than applying for a trademark. A trademark costs about 250 quid, a patent costs thousands, and you have to pay for lawyers to enforce it, and get a patent application for every jurisdiction. Also, you have to be able to prove that there is no preexisting example of the thing you are trying to patent. So most designs probably aren't original enough to patent. To be able to patent a pedal it would have to process sound in a way that is fundamentally novel, and using typical circuit components to process sound doesn't count. Basically for 99 percent of pedals there isn't going to be any enforceable IP on the circuit design.

I think the general concern about behringer is how they’re able to make these pedals for that price without resorting to unethical labour practises. But we’re all hypocrites on this type of subject as most of the clothing brands we buy could fall under that category

I used to use the SUPER FUZZ Behringer pedal, and thought it sound awesome.
Many other musicians came by asking me for that nasty sound, and I told them it was a Behringer pedal and they went crazy…never thought that it could sound like that.
Lots of prejudice with Behringer, I kind of love what they are doing.

I’m fortunate to own many of the original instruments that Behringer has cloned, but I’ve purchased several of the clones specifically for live performances. I prefer not to risk damaging the originals, as replacing them would be incredibly expensive. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well the clones perform—so much so that, in many cases, no one can tell the difference when they’re played live.

More importantly, these clones provide a fantastic opportunity for people who could never afford or even find the original instruments to experience them. I’m glad these alternatives exist, and if they make once-unreachable instruments accessible to everyone, why should that be an issue? Fender guitars, for instance, have been cloned for decades, yet they don’t face the same criticism—why should this be any different?

That said, I think it’s fair to distinguish between cloning instruments that are no longer manufactured and cases like Behringer’s blatant cloning of Intellijel’s Quad VCA module with their Eurorack module, Fiur Play. This feels like a more dubious practice. When a small, innovative company is cloned by a powerhouse like Behringer, it’s a much harder pill to swallow.

Ι bought a Behringer Ultra Chorus pedal in the mid ‘00s after my Boss chorus pedal malfunctioned and I needed a chorus effect for a gig.
Despite the plastic enclosure, I still have the pedal and it works just as good as when I first got it. Sounds -exactly- like a Boss CE-5.
