Learn how to wash your face properly! Most skincare routines neglect to address eyelid and eyelash health - which can lead to eyelid styes and other eye infections. As an eye doctor, I see a lot of people suffer from a buildup of skin oils in their lashes which can lead to a condition called blepharitis. In this video, learn how to cleanse your face to achieve healthy skin, healthy eyelashes and get rid of acne.

Do you have problems with oily skin, acne and blepharitis? In this video, learn my skin care routine and how to wash your face properly. Washing your face up to twice per day, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology, helps get rid of acne and prevents oily skin which can lead to a build up of irritating oils and bacteria on the skin. Although many people do wash their face, they often do it incorrectly by using abrasive washcloths and forgetting to clean their eyelids and eyelashes. As an eye doctor, I see so many people experience irritation and infections due to the buildup of skin oils leading to blepharitis.

⚡ How to properly wash your face ⚡

Based on the American Academy of Dermatology recommendations

1. Wet your face with lukewarm water
2. Apply a gentle, non-alcohol based face wash with your fingertips
PRO TIP : Do not use a washcloth or abrasive sponge (this will cause irritation to the skin)
3. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.
If your skin is dry or sensitive, apply lotion (non comedogenic) to the skin
Pro Tip - be very careful around the eyelids as the eyelid is the thinnest skin on the body

4. Cleans the eyelids and lashes using a hypochlorous acid solution or eyelid lid scrub such as shown in the video.

You should do a video about what make up removers to use and the best way to take off mascara. I feel like I’m attacking my eye whenever I try and get mascara off my eye lashes.

Never thought of washing my eyelids with a product, I would just use water. Now I'm going to look into this more.

Hey I just wanted to tell you I’ve followed your advice.... I had very itchy eyeballs, felt like there was something in my eyes all the time, crusty in the morning, sore dry eyelids and sometimes infections and sty’s. I got a heated eye mask, eye wipes that have tea tree and coconut, a moisturizing eye drop and one with manuka honey (both for dry eye) Well it’s been about five months of consistent use and I’m so much better. My eyes look healthy again. Thank you!

Doctor, also important to change pillow cases at least once or twice a week. And wash eyeglasses and sunglasses. Thank you for your advise!

67 years and been doing it wrong my whole life. It's what I was taught to do and that's to use a washcloth. Will stop that immediately, your video makes sense and with my skin getting older I'd better take it easy on it. Thanks for the lessons!!! Last week I watched your videos about cleaning eyelashes. So I got the good eyedrops, and the foaming cleanser and a pack of gentle eyelid brushes. Now if I could just learn how to not blink so much while I do anything to my eyes. I gave up makeup many years ago. Not into body lotions and beauty products. I'm at your videos list to search for lessons on how to avoid blinking when I put eye drops in. I'm TERRIBLE at the eye doctor when they have to put drops in or touch my eyes. How do I get over this?

I was considering getting some kind of scrubber for my face, but I just learned that God put the ideal ones on my hands already. Your tip about cleansing facial skin with just fingers saved me some hassle and possibly skin irritation. Thanks!

I use Dove unscented soap. I’m on allergy shots (3rd year). My eyes are so sensitive from allergies that I can’t wear eye makeup anymore. I like the idea of that portable eye wipe you showed.

Thank you for your advice. After 3-4 years of drops that were expensive and didn't do much, I saw your video on massaging the eye lids to get the lube going. It was like night and day the relief is instant and long lasting, I am careful to be gentle as you suggested. A huge THANK YOU.

I have been using OcuSoft Plus for years as I have chronic Blepharitis. I use one every morning but still often use a cotton swab to help remove crust from the lashes. I also have lashes falling into my eyes frequently. No cure. Just try to do the best I can to keep the condition at bay.

I have good skin so I rarely wash my face. Today I saw white bumps on my cheeks. Probably from working in the hot sun, but I am going to implement this on to my hygiene routine.

You have such nice natural eye color! it's like an arctic blue, I've never seen people with that color before, , , there's NO way you're still single! I'd like to see her... or him, I don't judge, , in a video sometime :)

What you demonstrate is how I have always washed my face and eyes, until I discovered warm unscented baby wipes and the Occusoft lid scrub wipes. I get a lot less water on the floor the way I do it now. Of course when I'm in the shower, then I don't have to worry about the water running down my elbows, like when I'm at the sink.

One of those facial steamers you can get on Amazon has been a lifesaver for my eyes. I hated the messy tedium boiling cotton wool to compress for my DED. The steam provides heat and moisture, then I do my massages afterward. If you do this though be careful dont get too close or you could burn yourself. I use tea tree cleanser for my whole face due to acne rosacea and now ocusoft makes tea tree eye cleanser so can't wait to try it.
