a great video! as a beginner, to do this i have been making a habit of replacing my saying/thinking of common words with their 한국어 equivalent ( 네, 아니요, 감사합니다, 안녕, 뭐에요 ) all throughout the day so that when somebody asks me a something i just respond 네 맞아요 because it is what naturally comes to mind when i want to confirm what they said

I always talk to myself in korea. And I can tell you it definitely helps. Before sleeping, I after I brush my teeth and wash my face, I look at the mirror and say to myself “ 너무 예쁘다, 잘자😘” 😂😂

Something I've been doing is translating a lyric a day from songs I listen to all the time. And look up vocabulary in the naver dictionary and any grammar points in that 1 lyric. Because I'm learning things in context and not just drilling long vocabulary lists, I remember them way more. And because song lyrics tend to have complex sentence structures with multiple clauses, I get exposed to more natural ways to express certain things. And I don't mean the topic of the songs, more how nouns, verbs, etc are connected together. Recognizing grammatical patterns helps me understand future text. Plus the fact that it's just 1 lyric a day makes it doable for me on a daily basis


edit: I've been doing this for two and a half months, and can now understand most grammar from songs. I'm continuing to do this to reinforce the usage. It's gotten a lot easier to understand imagery, metaphors, emotion, and overall expression. Also, I've realized with the naver dictionary that lyricists love playing with the multiple meanings of words. (example 그리다 most frequently means to draw/paint, but occasionally can also mean to imagine, so knowing all possible meanings helps a lot)

I make up short stories starting with 5 verbs, a weekday, a color, and a favorite k-star. The funnier the better. I really look forward to this time as it grows in my imagination.

I remember Billy asked in Twitter what is the hardest part in learning Korean, and I said that, at the moment it is to speak what is in my mind comfortably because I still use my translating skill when speaking korean and end up getting confused even more and now here! Another great tip is instead of looking up a word and matching it to a word in your mother tongue, match it to a feeling. When you learn the word ‘사랑하다’ match it to the feeling of love and not the word love. Same with objects, when you learn the word ‘책상’ picture a desk and the feeling of using a desk and not just the English word for desk.

I think this happens when I watch korean. I understand what they say without translating it on my mind.
