🥧FIG UPSIDE-DOWN PASTRY

📖INGREDIENTS :
-pre-made puff pastry (store bought)
-fresh figs
-fig jam or any jam

🥣instructions :
Cut the figs in half, place them with the flat part on the baking sheet, add a teaspoon of jam on top, cover with the puff pastry (we cut it round but can be any shape), seal the borders with a fork, poke some holes at the top, bake until golden at 180C

For those wondering, he said: figs have a symbiotic relationship with fig wasps which the fig through a small opening, losing their wings. Unable to flly out, they pollinate the fig. The fig produces an enzyme that digests the wasp, and by the time they are ripe you won't consume the insect.

To add some additional information, most grown figs in the modern day have been selectively bred to be able to reproduce without fig wasps, however wild fig trees still use fig wasps as do a lot of organic growers. Male fig wasps spend their entire life inside the fig, and new female fig wasps will leave the fig pregnant to find a new fig to pollinate and then give birth to a new generation of fig wasps! Its actually very fascinating, but most figs you eat probably won't have wasps in them even if they are organically grown or wild foraged!

I grew up with a fig tree in my backyard that produced the most delectable plump and sweet figs that I enjoyed every summer. Then one year the tree got an infection of some kind causing the wood to disintegrate so it had to be chopped down. I was so freaking sad! Grocery store figs just can't compare.

Even when a plant uses an enzymatic reaction to digest something, the materials from that object are still there just in a different different form. So being technical here I’m going to say that just because something went through a process doesn’t necessarily mean that the insect inside it is no longer, a part of it. So technically again, you were still eating insects which I’m fairly sure is not vegan.
