My dad got me into Volkswagens, around 1970, when I was sixteen years old. He had a succession of Volkswagens over the years.
I’ve owned at least five vintage VW cars and vans, so it’s a joy to see your Kombi in action. It brings back many memories.
My sister’s husband and son both have VW drag racers, with actual VW engines. They compete competitively in races with all manner of drag racers here in Texas.
I bought their ‘72 VW Kombi (bus) in 1982. It had a brother-in-law built racing engine in it. What a joy it was to drive!

Good Job taking care of that fellow camper's failure to address their coals/campfire. Glad CB gave you a thorough list of periodic maintenance, unlike most vehicles, the oil is a lubricant AND coolant in air cooled vehicles ! Just going in to change oil will make you aware of other issues before they become real failures.

Good job getting the fire out. If you're able to go south east from Germany, consider going to Turkey. There's another couple from England, "Tread The Globe", who have been touring that country with no present problems with lockdowns. You could spend the winter touring the southern Turkish coast line, where it's warmer than northern Europe. We lived in Turkey for 6 years and found it a great country with reasonable prices.

A tip for the future - shovel the un-burnt dirt into the burnt dity, it will prevent you from accidently spreading the fire instead!
