Strange Word in Ancient Egypt
Показать описание
Ancient Egypt utilized one of the most intricate writing systems in history, known as hieroglyphics. This system, inscribed on temple walls, stelae, and countless papyrus scrolls, was a blend of alphabet, ideograms, and pictograms.
Alphabetic Signs:
In hieroglyphics, alphabetic signs represent single sounds, much like the letters of the modern alphabet. These signs were relatively few and were used to spell out the sounds of words.
Ideograms:
Ideograms, or logograms, represent words or morphemes (units of meaning). For instance, a symbol of a man could stand for the word "man." An ideogram essentially captures an idea with a single sign.
Pictograms:
Pictograms are signs that represent objects by visually resembling them. They're similar to ideograms but are more direct visual representations of the objects they signify.
As civilizations evolved and intermingled, there was a need for a simpler, more efficient way of communicating. Several factors led to the decline of hieroglyphics in favor of pure alphabet systems.
