When I visited as a young person I was surprised by how close the White House is to the street, it just looked like a normal but really nice fence.

It's still insane how many times the White House was either renovated or completely reconstructed. The most ambitious one to date is still the reconstruction of 1948 - 1952, where it was basically completely gutted, and only the outer Walls and Roof remained.
