Survival Knife Defeats Axe #KnifeCenter #shorts

It’s a somewhat controversial method, but quite effective. You can “baton” your knife through small logs by striking the spine with a thick stick. This can be safer than swinging an axe in a crowded camp.

Bonus tip for the bonus tip: make your wedges BEFORE you start splitting bigger, tougher pieces of wood, especially with knots in them.

I use my Esee 5 to split wood while camping. Works very well

Batoning is controversial? I thought it mandatory to include at least one scene of knife batoning in every bushcraft video montage, kind of like starting your fire with a ferro rod?

No knife will ever beat an axe at what an axe does

I mean kukris are the best of both worlds. It's like an axe machete and knife had a child. Can split wood, delimb sizeable branches, make notches, clear brush and feather stick.

How nicely nature grew that piece with smooth edges on both ends

I've been using an ESEE 4 for a good 4 years of camping, batoning nearly every single trip. I've probably split over 300 logs at this point with it and it shows absolutely no signs of damage. It's easy to resharpen and while I do wish it was another inch in length, I have an axe for anything the knife can't handle.

Laser strike is such an overlooked & underrated esee knife.
IMO it is esee's best blade.

I envy the folks who live where there's wood that's easily split. Not many trees like that near San Antonio and the Hill Country 😢

I use my Esee Izula 2 almost daily. One hell of a durable fixed blade.

Well done, good teaching. I hope you continue to teach.

Shrade schf9 is a good one for splitting and chopping, but still manageable enough for all day carry and smaller jobs or even taking hogs on hunts. 1/4 inch thick slab of tough steel, great grip, good grinds. Maybe 50-60 bucks and it's a lifetime of use type purchase.

There's a guy here on YouTube named Felix Immler who's got a video about doing this with a Swiss army knife.

Mors Kochanski demonstrated a better option. Use your knife to carve wedges and then baton those through logs instead of your knife. I have seen several dozen knives break during batoning. That includes knives that were full tang.

I don't think batoning is controversial lol!

I'm so glad you put this vid out cuz when I say the same thing I often hear the response 'I know what I'm doing' . Coming from another guy it becomes a great idea, lol.
