Shout-out to Hakita for doing everything so that Ultrakill can run on my garbage pc

as a student game developer I kinda expected this, there is a shit ton of tricks that game devs use for optimization in games that are outright ridiculous.

I only recognized this because of some source maps that take place on moving trains, which would have moving skyboxes while the platforms were still

This is extremely clever and the effect works perfectly in-game, it does FEEL like you're rapidly sliding down a pyramid slope. Full props to Hakita for not spending more time than he needed, I'm sure all the time that could have been spent on a full "sliding down a pyramid" movement went into balancing and testing the fight instead.

It didn't fool me, but that could simply be because I do game development as a hobby. Oftentimes, whenever it seems like there is an area you are infinitely moving through - think a fight in a train car or on top of a bunch of big trucks - the level will just slide the background until it loops at a specified point (tunnels are really good for hiding this!). In very few occasions (rare enough I can't think of one off the top of my head), the player will genuinely be moving around on an object and the background is static, but the player and the object the player is on will both be teleported back to a similar looping point in the level.

Spawning a filth and seeing it keep up with me and v2 is fucking scary

"This shit is completely flat- I mean, flatter than...me."
Fucking same bro 😭

Considering there's the possibility that this part of the fight could theoretically last forever if someone was dedicated enough, I honestly expected a trick like this.

I remember they use a similar trick in the Hat in Time train levels.

Even when i'm not a game dev, i knew that i'm not really sliding anywhere, but i still was interested in how this was done. I have no idea why i hadn't try to fly with a cheat menu open, so thanks hehe

I was too pre-occupied with how AWESOME a sliding car chase off the side of a pyramid was

This is actually something I identified as the case almost immediately; the way in which you move is extremely telling, plus also the recognition that this is *vastly* easier than actually doing a proper sliding battle. Implementing special behavior for the slide in this level to make this possible would've been much harder, for little actual gain, so the obvious solution is to present an illusion of actually sliding instead.

wow this such a rare thing in gaming, nobody ever used it and it was so unexpected

As soon as you enter the second phase normally you can stay in the air ultraboosting and with the rocket launcher.

I mean, how else would you do it, really?

There are two things to sell this illusion harder. 1. Have a tilt of camera towards the top side always. We tend to keep head against gravity and that tilt mean we are trying to keep head against gravity. Robots dont need that but this illusion is for us humans.

2. You noticed the movements were not much changed from crouch. So one thing that can be done to sell sliding is add inertia to movement ie slower change in momentum/velocity with certain movements(left and right) more slippery than others (up and down).

3) other player have noticed V2 doesnt maneuver himself and that suddenly makes this fight easier espcially after coming from the ordeal inside the pyramid. Simple dash and dodges left and right could suffice but caveat could be that V2 may reach the edge of the stage and the illusion gets broken

But guees its acceptable as is right now so theres no need to go above and beyond for this

whiplash into v2 in the actual fight, it should bounce you off him and let you attack him from above

But can you slide outside of that platform?
I never saw people trying to actually move there

no wonder i felt like this felt off, i didn't even know i was sliding down a pyramid the first time i did this fight

this is actually a pretty common trick map developers use to give the illusion of you and other entities. notably in source games. although you aren't actually touching the ground, you are normally on some kind of platform. the way they did it in this game is actually quite unique. if they just made it so you were sliding down a really long, but still finite platform, you would eventually reach the bottom. with this trick, you can "slide down" the "pyramid" indefinitely until V2 is killed. and obviously when V2 does die, you're just teleported somewhere else in the map.

sorry im a fuckin nerd about this stuff

From the first time I played, I knew it was fake but it kinda looked real, then again I’m that one dude who is always like “I wonder how long it took the developer to code that in?”
