You can use a coin for two things:
1) punch it, again and again and again to instakill anything
2) pay

The ferryman has been transporting countless people who never payed for his services, possibly due to Gabriel or the fact that they were not supposed to die at that moment to receive the ferryman's coin but once he saw a machine having the decency (in his pov) to pay in exchange for passage for his sustenance, he acted accordingly to his duties, regards from one machine to another. It's ironic but an interesting theory nevertheless.

I know the game consists in killing, but i always spare the ferryman. I mean, he's just chill there existing and seems nice, plus being a gabriel fanboy

i found this by accident, i realised that attacking the enemy even if they're protected gives you style points so i started combo hitting him until i punched a coin and he did the animation it was really cool figuring out on my own and the funny thing is i was going to look the challenge up after i do that run

fun fact, after you give him the coin the challenge is already complete and you still can initiate the boss fight, making you able to give him the coin and then kill him. (i did it lol)

Lol I did this my first time because I saw in the book it said an old man can hold only so many coins or some shit. He seemed pretty chill for not attacking me the moment he saw me like the rest of the enemies so I was happy to just let him go.
