New 2021 Bentley Bentayga vs Range Rover review | two luxurious SUVs tested | Autocar

Who makes the is the best luxurious 4x4? The just-revised 2021 Bentley Bentayga will think it's in with a shout. It received more than 1000 changes late last year and, equipped with a 4.0-litre V8 engine, has all the trappings of the ultimate luxury SUV. It costs £146,700, has lashings of leather and luxury equipment and makes 542bhp, giving it 4.4sec 0-62mph performance and a 180mph top speed.

The Range Rover, meanwhile, is the original blend of luxury and off-roader, and hasn't stopped excelling at both since its inception. This latest version, a D300 in Westminster trim as tested here, costs rather less than the Bentley but that doesn't make the comparison invalid. At £86,920 it's still an expensive car. Sure, it makes 296bhp so has a top speed of only 130mph and wants 7.4sec to go from 0-62mph. But maybe that's enough for an SUV?

That still isn't the right shape for a Bentley grille. As a former employee and then motoring journalist, it breaks my heart that the entire current range has been severely battered with the ugly stick.

Thats an £80k Range against a 250k bentley. Compare that bentley to the SVAutobiography and lets see the bentley try to pick up points, except for "bentleys are built to be sporty"

Might be biased because I have a RR, but I would still choose it over the Bentayga. More than enough power (5L supercharged V8), rides good, and looks great. My only issue is, I wish I had gotten the LWB instead of the SWB.

The Range Rover is just still a fabulous car. When it’s working (which ours has always been looked after and thus fine), nothing for the money in the second hand market compares that has AWD, the interior, the capability, the boot, the features. It’s just amazing.

My biased summary as a Range Rover owner. The Bentley strikes me as the car to drive from the country house into the city for an expensive night out. The Range Rover strikes me as the car you drive from the town house for a weekend in the country that might include horses, or in my case mountain bikes.
A good balanced review by Matt though.
