It was around that period that all Mario games had an air of continuity about them. Whether it was E Gadd making the gadgets in mario party advance, a Toadsworth statue appearing in mario golf toadstool tour, the star spirits from Paper Mario returning in mario party 5, or my favorite Rudy returning as the villain in Dr Mario 64 from Wario Land 3.

Then the mandates came in and Nintendo made a huge push for games to be very isolated. I think Odyssey is finally starting to change that

That Mario Adventure 2 joke is actually pretty apt. If Adventure is to Sonic, then Sunshine is to Mario, both being more story driven, having a mistaken identity plot, and having continuity with other games in their respective franchises.

In super Mario oddisey when you capture bowser you can see flashbacks from old battles against bowser

And In Luigi’s Mansion King Boo talks about getting revenge on Mario. Mario only faced off against King Boo only once ever in a main line game: Sunshine. Sunshine is a prequel to Mansion.

The whole GameCube era was insanely cohesive. You can see that the most in Double Dash. Luigi’s Mansion is in the background, you can see daisy cruiser on the water in delphino square, toad city is below rainbow road. It’s awesome.

Unfortunately the brush's E. Gadd logo was retconned in Bowser's Fury, instead having Jr's signature logo on it instead. Does this mean Jr made another, reverse engineering Gadd's tech? Possibly.

Don’t forget, when you capture Bowser in Odyssey, it shows his memories of fighting Mario in previous games, including Super Mario Bros and Mario Bros 3.
I know Odyssey was mentioned, but this is a direct callback to prior games, unlike the DK sections

Low-key since Metal Mario is his own character and has been clarified to be Mario's rival, they can actually do a similar concept to Sonic Adventure 2 since Bowser could use him as an ally; not that they would but it'd be cool to see it 🤣
