I turned 13 on the 8th of November 1965. Four short years later I was saying goodbye to my boyfriend as he was sent to Vietnam. He did come back and we did marry but he lived years with the horrors and disease from his time there. Sadly he is gone, from disease caused by the chemicals that were sprayed over the countryside.

I was there that day & night.

There were two hills with a gap in-between. I was in B Coy. 1R.A.R. (Australian) 1 R.A.R. were tasked with the hill on the right. The Americans on the left. B Coy. was tasked to search the gap between the two hills A Coy was on our right & approaching the left hill. The had a major contact & we lost two (bodies not recovered until the late 2010/20. On word of the contact B Coy. was tasked to climb the hill from the rear & come down on the enemy. We got half way up the hill when we were call off.

The Americans had walked into a Horseshoe Ambush. Two Companies up one behind. The VC had allowed them to get well inside the Fire Zone. Delta Coy, 1/503d if I remember. It was bad. The din was from the fire fight, day & night was tremendous. We were only 1000 yards away.

The Australian Battalion 1 R.A.R. was re-tasked to provide Cordon. on the near side of the hill. The Ambush was on the reverse slope. B Coy took up its position in a Teak Forest. We switched to the American Radio frequency & listened first hand to the battle. Not recommended, but we did anyway. Security went out the window & plain language was used (As it was in the Battle of Long Tan) The Battle took place in a ravine & the Americans were in the bottom of the ravine with the VC in Bunkers higher up & firing down. Visibility in this thick Jungle was only about 10 yards. There was a lot of hand to hand bayonet fighting. The ground was strewn with football sized stones which made getting a foothold difficult & ricochets from rounds flying everywhere.

During the night we heard an American call Artillery Fire in on his own position. He asked that only the Kiwi Battery fire. (Kiwi arty. is the best in the world & win the games every year) The Kiwi's had the Italian Howitzer, a high angle Weapon, as opposed to the American Gun. We heard him adjust fire by feet. It saved them. I know, 319 Battery denies this, but it's true. The Kiwi's fired 1000 Rounds that night.

A side story. In our position in Cordon 5 Pl B Coy. had a herd of Elephants walk through position. We didn't see them but their footprints were there in the wet sand next morning. Kristofferson was a Chopper Pilot at the battle. This is a very, simple version of the battle. A more descriptive image is in the Book, "First to Fight." by Bob Breen. ISBN 0 04 320218 7. Library of Congress No# 88-71387.

With so many people in our country going backwards. They should watch this music video. Cause race didn't matter to him. He kept going to save lives that's a man to admire.

Big & Rich have a documentary where they travel to Vietnam with this guy that gave Kenny his hat. It’s incredible.

That is a special song growing up during the war, being from a military family. One day I was talking to this man and Nam came up in the conversation. He said when he came back, he was spit on and had tomatoes thrown at him. It was sad to think about because most of the boots on the ground were drafted. This guy also told me every year he rides his Harley from California to the Wall in DC. He did it because every year there was this old man who stood on an overpass in the middle of the country and saluted the biker vets driving passed.

On the 8th of November 1965, I had just turned 18 and was in Saigon waiting transportation to Bien Hoa and the 173rd. I was immediately rushed to their base where I discovered my MOS was changed and now I was an infantryman, a replacement for one that was killed. Although not trained as an infantryman, and never even seen a M16 (trained with M14) I served my entire tour with them. I will tell you, OJT is a hell of away to learn how to be an Infantryman. Hard to believe it was 58 years ago.

Thank you so much, this is the first time I have ever heard anyone actually talk about Remembrance Day, I have heard it mentioned in passing, I respect all soldiers, even those that are not our allies, because they too, are simply humans, with families, just doing their duty.

With this happening during the Vietnam war. Me as a Patriotic American who grew up in the 90s. Any time I see anyone wearing a Vietnam Veteran hat. I walk up, shake there hand, and fight back tears in my eyes. As I thank them for supporting their country in a War our Government forced us to join! So this song 8Th of November has always got to me. And your my very first reaction video im watching of it

This is a very good song by these guys. I know they are known for "fun stuff" but they can hit you in the heart strings when they want to. Thanks for doing this one Craig!!!❤

When John Rich goes high and Big Kenny goes low at the "Swallows it down with his tears", that line is extremely powerful as it is... but their contrast in pitch gives me chills every time I hear that line or any other line in this song where they do that pitch difference and it's noticeable.
