In today's travel vlog, we're going to a movie theater in Mexico! We had so many questions. Are all the movies in Spanish? How much is it?

We're going to the movies in Mexico in today's daily vlog! We used to watch movies in the theaters quite often in the US, but we've never gone in Mexico until today. We had so many questions! How expensive is a movie theater in Mexico? What are movie theaters like in Mexico? Are movies in Mexico all in Spanish? For anyone who, like us, had NO idea what to expect at an upscale Mexican movie theater, we talk about ticket prices, what concessions cost, and other details about the experience we had in Guadalajara, Mexico.

As a US expat, before this, we weren't even sure whether movie theaters in Mexico would have movies that were dubbed, have subtitles, or completely be in Spanish! Going to the movies in Mexico was a really great experience and we're excited to see what the "VIP" version is like next time. Especially since we now know that Mexico movie theaters in English are very common.

ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world—starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. Normally here in Mexico we like to watch a movie on its original language with subtitles (except for animeted movies, we watch them dubbed in spanish, yeah sounds wierd).

Fun fact: Cinepolis is the first movie theater company to introduce in the world the VIP experience (it is as well the parent company of many other theaters around the world) :)
So yeah definately try the VIP experience, you got 2 love seats, electrically reclined, menu, waiters, etc. (in that one you dont need to buy from the candyshops, you just order it from the waiter by using an electric service button).

It was and I think it is a Mexican government policy to leave the movies rated for teenagers and adults in English. Since little kids can't read or speak English. The government allowed only kids' movies to be dubbed in Spanish. It is a way to force the public to either learn English or read subtitles. I remember when a friend from Spain went to the movies in Mexico. He was so surprised that he had to read subtitles. It is because in Spain every movie is dubbed in Spanish. They are so proud about their Spanish that they wanted the movie "coco" to be dubbed in Spanish from Spain. However, Disney Pixar refused to allow them and the movie was screened in Mexican Spanish. Some of Spaniards protested and this made news in Mexico. Crazy right?

Amazingly enough this government policy has not prevented Mexico from becoming one of the biggest markets for movies in the world. Two theater companies dominate the market and I think that both of them have movie theaters in the USA and some other countries.

Good to know that they tell you on the poster if the movie is subtitled or dubbed. When we were travelling through Mexico our Spanish was very beginner and all the movies on buses were dubbed into Spanish. I could kind of follow along with children's movies, but I think I was picking up the gist mainly from the colour and movement rather than the words 😅

This is not upscale, this is the regular theater. Try the VIP option at Cinepolis, or better yet, the 4D. You omitted the wonderful options in popcorn! They offer 4 different flavors: chile, butter, caramel and light, and they are actually pretty good! You can select up to 2 flavors and they will give you a giant bucket with a separation in the middle.

Cinépolis is awesome for going to the movies. Great quality and quite affordable. If available, you should check out a movie in 4DX; it’s like going on a ride. You might like the experience.

We love seeing a movie in Mexico; usually in Ensenada when we get off the cruise ship. You both are so ADORABLE, I can't get enough of your videos.

I recently had the reverse experience, I live in Mexico and went to the movies in the US.
One thing I noticed, is that, the adds start a few minutes before the time on the schedule, and the trailers start playing right on the time on the schedule; meanwhile, here in Mexico, it's a mixture between trailers and adds that usually starts right on the time on the schedule or shortly after.
Also, at the end of every trailer, the theater puts the expected release date in the US; but here in Mexico, we don't always get that, only if the trailer has it on already.
In the US the seats are way more comfortable; not to mention the different varieties of rooms to watch the movie in.

At least that's what I noticed when I went to two different AMC theaters (one in Tucson and one in Las Vegas)

Wouldn't really call this one upscale, that would be the cinepolis VIP ones, but nice video either way.

You really need to try Cinemex Platino (much better than Cinépolis VIP). And when you do, ask the waiter for a Tamarindo Mezcal Martini. You'll love it! :-)

Lived in Providencía GDL for several years... (I'm from NYC.) Cinepolis VIP theaters in Mexico put most movie theaters in the U.S. to shame at the price they charge. Also worth checking out the 4D theaters if you haven't already. Tip: Befriend a lot of natives. They will introduce to some really nice places (hidden beaches, night clubs, restaurants, etc.) which are usually kept secret from tourists. Mexico is FULL of places like that.
