What can I do If my civil rights have been violated?

Civil rights has been an area of law, particularly in today’s society, that has really been pushed to the forefront of litigation. We get a number of calls here in our office about civil rights that have been violated. They have a vast spectrum of violations— everything from workplace discrimination and harassment to being abused by a police officer. That’s a civil rights matter. Folks in prison institutions not being cared for properly, not being given adequate medical care or being harassed by prison guards – all of those are civil rights issues.

There’s often the question of, “Well, what can I do?” There are a number of things that have to be done in a civil rights case and a number of things that must be looked at in a civil rights case. The number of civil rights violations that are possible are very, very, very vast. You have to understand this principle, that civil rights are designed to protect you from government actors – police officers, counties, police departments, courts, prisons, workers. They’re designed to protect certain things and some civil entities, like employers and the rights that you’re protected from civilly as is relates to them. What do you do?

One that’s a little more obvious is, if I’m on the side of the road and I feel like a police officer has violated my rights – we see this a lot, as it’s been high in our news coverage and what not – the worst thing you can do is sit there and argue and go back and forth with the police officer. Don’t do it. That’s what lawsuits are for. Just collect your evidence, collect your information, and contact a competent lawyer. Let a lawyer deal with it. You do have certain rights, and the police are not above the law. The best thing we can tell folks to do is comply with the police officer’s lawful orders. If they’re giving you an unlawful order, and it’s going to place your life in danger, you have an obligation to get home safe to your family, your friends and your loved ones, so don’t challenge the police officer’s unlawful orders. Document them, and then file a lawsuit against them.

There are certain steps that need to be taken to file a lawsuit, depending on whether it’s municipality or a state agency or a federal agency. There’s a lot of law that has to be considered, so as soon as it happens, what you must do is immediately – don’t wait a week or two; don’t wait two or three days – contact a lawyer immediately. The clock immediately starts ticking, concerning the statute of limitations and how you must file a suit and what things must be done prior to even filing a lawsuit in court. You want to contact a competent attorney very quickly. Whether it’s in the workplace, whether it’s by a police officer, a prison, a state hospital – it doesn’t matter – call a competent lawyer immediately and let them start working through the facts of your case to determine what rights have been violated and what needs to be done.

Do I have a violation of my civil rights because I've lived in the same house for 30 years and now an Indian tribe is building a 9 story, 398k square foot resort and casino right next door to my property. Their environmental impact report said that there will be extra noise and lights associated with this build. 🥺 How would I even be able to sell and move elsewhere? Please help! I'm no spring 🐔! I would bet ---You ABSOLUTELY WILL be able to sell your real property at much higher than pre-casino property values. Keep an eye on sales in your area so you know where you stand now to compare to future FairMValue next year & 2 years out & future. As the values go up You can also expect prop tax to start to increase as well. The casino should bring a lot of interest, visitors and business revenue to the town. If you can hold out -- may see much of the areas around the casino will likely be valuable as commercial property (gas stations, hotels, shopping developments, entertainmenr venues & similar). I had my downstairs neighbors. Turning the heat up to 90 degrees, causing me to have seizures which I'm on disability for landlord. Turned around kicked me out when I Complained right after she also raise my rent. But no one else's told me told me. It was because I had lived there so long. They told me Akron office handles it call Akron office. They say Cleveland handles it leave a message. They call back and pronounce my last name as bitch and giggle in the background on my phone. Call a lawyer, hang up on you. Mid sentence won't even listen to what is going on. So what's a person supposed to do. I tried to file a complaint with the health department over my landlord. Allowing the heat to be turned up. They refuse to let me file a complaint or talk to anyone higher. Contact code enforcement same thing. Police same thing. The hospital was sick when I told them why I had my seizure. And how nobody would help me. Now I live homeless in my car because all the homeless shelters turned me away. Told me once you go in there you can never leave. Can't have a phone. Can't contact anyone on the outside world.
How I will have jobs that I will have to do while I'm there. So I ask. How will I continue to get my medication if I can't ever leave? How will I find an apartment if I can't look for one? How do I continue to pay my storage fee? Where all my belongings are. The guys said like. I already told you this ain't the place for you. Go to the next one they tell me I have to be black to be in there. So I go to walk away. They tapped me on my shoulder tell me Just joking I Fill out the paper man. Questions me about my food stamps getting taken? I told him when the president stopped covid I lost my food stamps. He then asked me if I was Democrat or republican? I asked what that was for hecause I pay your Check you get every month because You're too lazy to work. Says I don't deserve any help a thousand dollars a month is more than Enough to buy a house. I tell him i'm not on s s I? I then leave. Third place Salvation Army. My insurance company tells me I can get ice there for my cooler. I go there. Mann says I was misinformed. They can do it this one time but never again. Who told me this? I tell him United healthcare. My insurance company that spoke to somebody here and they told them that. He still says they were misinformed. This is how they treat you when you're homeless. Nobody will help you. In their eyes you're a criminal. There's nobody to protect your rights or at least that i've been able to find. The moment they hear you're homeless they hang up. Don't forget I have an income. I just can't find a place to live since everything went up. Can't afford to move Neither.
