Thankyou so much for taking the time to help others, especially when we cannot afford the best tango lessons.

Thank you, Vanessa. We learn directly from your tips, and we learn from observing your wonderful technique and examples (such as the boleos and adornos at the wall) when illustrating the good/right way.

Using a wall

Pro: Practice pivots
Con: Leaning on the wall for balance
Tip: Use only a single finger on the wall

[Work on the open floor, without a wall! This also has pros and cons. Great for balance. May be too hard for some, but we can work up to it. Beware of using body compensations for balance that still needs development.]

Pro: Practice speed in change of direction
Con: Staying in one spot
Tip: Move your hands along the wall with each step

Solo exercises

Pro: Improve your balance, posture, and spatial awareness
Pro: Discover your own way of moving and expressing yourself
Con: Not improving communication skills

[Work in such a way that you fully visualize your partner. A person observing you and your embrace in the air should likewise be able to "see" whether your partner is tall/short, big/skinny, energetic/relaxed.]

Exercises without high heels

Pro: Learn natural mechanisms of movements such as walking
Con: Getting used to a slightly different axis
Pro: Rest the feet
Con: Staying in a heel-raise position

Bending the knee

Pro: Practice connection with the floor
Pro: Practice effects for musicality
Con: Compensating for a lack of hip stability
Con: Affecting body alighments

Exercises in front of a mirror

Pro: Check and correct the shape of positions
Con: Unable to observe moves with a change of direction
Con: Relying on external (visual) feedback instead of desirable direct internal feedback (sensations)

[Use a video camera and review after each period in a session. My partner and I use Coach's Eye application on an iPad. An iPad, with its ability to scrub back-and-forth, works great. We also use a wide-angle lens attachment to cover most of our floor.]

Practice giro in four steps

Pro: Learn the four-series loop
Con: Unable to manage partner separation during weight transfer
Con: Unnaturally long steps
Tip: Practice a full circle with five or more steps

Practice giro with a marker on the floor

Pro: Visualize the center of the circle
Con: Tilting the head down to look at the marker, thus losing balance, posture, and focus on the path to follow
Tip: Elevate the marker or work without one

[Use a broom or mop as your partner. See how vertical you can keep your partner. This helps you calibrate your embrace, dissociation, and stepping on the circle.]
