Best dog breeds for seniors. Dogs are great companions for seniors, they will keep them active physically and mentally. In this video we will show you TOP 10 best dogs for seniors.

Are you an older adult interested in getting a dog? Perhaps you have retired and decided that you finally have the extra time to care for a dog. Maybe you crave the kind of companionship that a dog can offer. Everyone should have the opportunity to share life with a dog.

Dog ownership offers many health benefits and improves your life in many important ways. And retirement can be the ideal time to bring a new furry companion into your home, especially if you find the right dog breed. While you might have looked for one set of characteristics in a family dog — like a high energy level, which works well when you have kids — you probably want a different set of traits in a dog you’ll adopt in retirement.

The dog for senior should be:
1. Smaller breed. Its easier to handle then giant dogs, especially when you fail the training
2. Calm breed. Same reason.
3. Adult dog. Seniors often times want peace in their life. Its hard to have peacefull life with little puppy. I would suggest all seniors to get adult, obedient and friendly dog from shelter.

I LOVE the larger breeds that is why I adopted my Poppy Jo, the rough collie. She weighed 70 pounds when I got her at 7 years of age. She now weighs about 100 pounds. She was spayed at age of 7 and after I got her her life became so very quiet. and non active. She had been a breeder in a puppy mill for 6 years. One vet said she could gain weight from being spayed so late in her life. Her diet is now very nutritious Hill's Prescription Diet for sensitive stomachs. No treats and only her dog food twice a day.

The reason I like large dogs is because I know where she is and can not trip over her. I am now 70 years of age and Poppy and I are BOTH slow in our movements. She is a wonderful dog I have had smaller dogs (Carin Terrier) and I always seemed to be tripping over him.

I agree a smaller dog is best. I have an alert and active and happy personality but I must walk with a walker. Also, I like the short haired breeds for looks. Any opinion on a breed that has short hair and will not bark a lot when going shopping or to the Senior Center for a few days a week??

Greyhound, especially a retired racer. Mellow personality, needing little exercise other than long walks.

Hi, thanks for a great video! I´m a senior who is going to live in the countryside with a large garden, where a dog could be freely roaming. Had a curly coated retriever for 11 years, a wonderful dog but now obviously not a match for seniors. So my question is: I´m looking for a breed with at least a little of watchdog temperament, not excessive need for exercise (but certainly daily walks, roaming in the garden etc.). If possible I´d prefer an adult dog, so looking in a shelter could be an option. Saw your recommendation of retired greyhounds, but they have no watchdog inclination.

I have a King Charles Spaniel and I am 70 yo. He is 10 and is the most loving, affectionate and loyal. I loves to sleep touching me. He mimics the sounds I make to him which really makes me laugh. Just found out he has a brain tumor, so I am giving him as much love as I can. Enjoy your beautiful fur babies.😊

I think a.dog who is older is best.for.seniors...but thought i would take a look to see what others say.

A.calmer.dog with no shedding like standard.poodle...but grooming.costs and many need special food now.days.

A MUT FROM THE POUND IS MY FIRST.CHOICE ALWAYS..THO I USUALLY FIND PURE BREED THERE..

Where is the Boston Terrier on this list? The Boston is just a bit more active than the Frenchie, and is very friendly to people. The eyes are so expressive, kind and sweet. Also the snort dogs have resque places for short faced dogs, besides shelters. Look it up in your area. Boston's are the best!🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

I like the Cavaliers, too. However, they have so many health issues, don't they? That could get really pricey, especially if seniors get an older one. I believe overbreeding has created a seizure issue in these dogs? Maybe I'm wrong...not sure. Love this video anyway☺☺
