Across Moscow, you'll find suspiciously familiar fast food restaurants.
Leaving Russia in May, McDonald's sold its buildings to a Russian businessman, and on the 12 June he already opened 50 of them back up without bothering to revamp them. Much.
AND he sold more than 120,000 burgers on the first day, breaking all previous records over the entire period that McDonald's was in Russia. And that's just the start - the new owner plans to open a thousand restaurants in Russia within 5 years. The original Macdonald's had 850.
There ARE a few things that have changed. The new name is "Tasty, full stop". Although a play on words can also translate that as "Tasty, and that's the point", or "Tasty, the meeting point".
Big Macs and McFlurry had to go. And while 99% of ingredients already came from Russian suppliers, some important products, like Coca-Cola, are dropping off because of the new sanctions.
The restaurant chain is looking for new suppliers, and is determined to guarantee the same quality of products. Even the Big Mac replacement is currently being developed. Coffee will continue to be supplied by the Indian investor, who bought the Russian division of the Finnish company Paulig.
All in all, the chain owner is optimistic, saying: "Our guests will get used to the new name and will understand that even though it's no longer possible to hang out at the Mac, they can do so at "Meeting Point"," he added.
Packaging still doesn't have any branding. But with Russia banning all single-use packing from 2025, it makes little sense to waste time and money on this.
