Don't use darkness to harvest potatoes and carrots, use a Fortune enchanted tool. It's not as fast, but it's more than twice as many drops with Fortune 3. Darkness auto-harvesting is still good for wheat and beets because Fortune only gives more seeds, not more crops. (Might be worth it if you really like composting seeds for bonemeal, though.). Nether wart also gives more when harvested with Fortune.

3:06 when doing this, you should use the F3 menu to detect which blocks are under a lava pool rather than randomly placing trapdoors.

Last time I checked, light passes through a lot of the none full blocks, so you can hide lighting (like glow stone or frog lights) behind slabs or stairs
