Everything that once cheap or discarded like oysters, salmon, and lobster now turned luxurious and expensive. And something that in the old times were expensive like chicken now became cheap and very accessible.

They still give out free oysters in Korea when ordering sashimi. Western countries are just ripping customers off.

You can still get these fairly cheap in the US and parts of Asia, I've never thought of Oysters as a luxury food at all, more of a southern treat.

One of the few farming industries that actually IMPROVES the quality of the environment

Oyster farming really has very few critics and those who do usually aren’t aware of how it’s done. Not only are the practices and presence of the oysters good for the waters, the required habitat has oyster farmers actively protecting these areas from pollution and development.

I remember when I once found a small crab inside a oyster that I was about to eat.

I used to be married to an oyster farmer. It’s a tough job. You can hear them knocking oysters a half a mile away when it’s busy.

I never realized how expensive they could be. We have always gotten ours for free when we go oyster fishing. We also do not live in England so that might be a cause of it.

Come to Philippines, it costs only 50 pesos or $1 and you can enjoy a plate full of oysters! 😂

When I lived in China a few years back, you can get grilled oysters with garlic sauce for about 1 dollar apiece. Used to eat a dozen of them with Qingdao beer on street corners all over Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Some of the best midnight snacking I've ever had, next to Chinese Hot Pot, Japanese Ramen and Mexican Menudo.

Where I live, oysters usually cost less than $1US each (and that's when served at happy-hour) if you buy them from a fishery at a market or a fish store, it works out to less than $1US per oyster.

Here in Denmark you can go out and pick them up for free in our shallow oceans.
