Engineers: “We have this great engine design”
BMW: “Ok, can we use the cheapest metals and plastics to build it?”

I can’t even imagine buying a V8 from bmw when their Inline sixes are so good

Notice he had nothing to say about any of the older V8s M62/S62 are great engines!

My father introduced me to a BMW engineer who retired in 1997 he spoke with a very thick accent but 2 things he told me American roads aggregate too much, and a real engine is no good until it seizes up the first time. He had the craziest things in his garage including a carousel he could flip a car and do maintenance with it sitting upside down. I believe this day he was machining a new piston for my dad's bike and he was able to tell the cylinder was on its 3rd hone by inspecting the old connecting rod.

The M62 4.4 V8 in my 2003 X5 is still running great w/almost 240 miles on it. Dealer changed oil per SII for first 100k miles, 7k oil changes for next 100k miles, 5k oil changes once it got over 200k miles. Coolant changed every two or three years. There's another M62 4.4 X5 in town, over 230k miles on that one, too.
Fluid changes and NO high RPMs until warmed up if you expect longevity. MPG cruising at under 75 mph is great too. I've gone from Dallas, TX, to Tampa, Fl, with only ONE fuel stop.

The S65 is great once you fix all the issues. It’s going to cost a good amount, but you’ll have a solid car after that

Buy a M62B44 or a M60B40 they are strong. 500hp on stock internals. Anymore you need to gap rings and they like boost and sound great.

S65 is one the best v8s produced.. yes rod bearings and throttle actuators are an issue but once taken care of and you keep up on maintenance they never disappoint.. I’ve worked with company’s that put s65s in there drift cars and beat on them all day everyday with zero issues

My S65 in my e92 has no issues at 130k miles. I only fill up with 91 from quality gas stations (shell, Mobile1, Chevron) and I stay on top of the oil changes. I also let the rpm’s drop before driving it and let the car fully warm up before ragging on it. Yes, rod bearings are a known short coming on these cars I won’t disagree but you also have to be a responsible owner

Nothing is as bad as an n20 rofl😂 … S65 has rod bearing clearance issues aint no amount of maintenance gon fix that theres fixed versions

As a BMW master tech… yeah anything v8 is a huge pain in the ass. Just valve cover gaskets are like 15 hour book times. You’ll be paying out your ass for that. Just get the 6 cylinders and you can make enough power.

A matter mechanic can knock out the valve stand in 7 hours. My buddy been a BMW mechanic 15 years can do it in a little over 5

I completely agree. The M62 was the best, and the modern S63 is holding up well compared to the previous V8s.
