Rob you constantly amaze me on how you take junk and make something useful out of it. You always give me food for thought.

Hi Rob !

Your video came out in the right time for me ... I have to make a backplate for a 4-jaw chuck I got from ebay in aug-sep 2014, I think.

I have had some thinking on how to make the backplate - I have a bigger 4-jaw chuck, way too big for my use of the lathe, I think, but it has the right fixture for the lathe - so, maybe I will use this backplate for my newer and smaller 4-jaw chuck.

The old big 4-jaw has NO individual adjusting of the single jaw - I think it's called an automatic centering chuck. The new smaller 4-jasw chuck has BOTH the commen tightning for all 4 jaws AND individual adjustment af each jaw.

So when the weather allows it - it's way too cold in the shop now - I'll investigate options for a new backplate from the old one.

Rob,
Nice trick with the chuck mounting plate. I will probably be getting a Sieg Chinese late in the near future. It has the same three bolts that mount the chuck to the spindle plate. Thanks for the tip. It's something I shall keep in mind. The only 4-jaw the Sieg comes with is the scroll type . . . not as accurate at an independently adjustable 4-jaw chuck. Thanks for the video.
Hope you are enjoying your summer while our East Coast is drowning in snow!

Nice. Would have enjoyed seeing you machine it.

I also look for barbell weights at the scrap yard. 10lb weight works well for a backing plate when it's all machined up. there great for lots of projects

G'day mate.  You are no doubt a genius.  I only have the one problem, no treadmill motor.  I guess I need to go to the gym and take one apart.  Thanks for sharing.

Gotta love road side collection for the useful steel. Thanks for the info Rob. I'm from Brisbane and always trying to learn about lathes before I buy one "Chinese, no doubt". I didn't realize the mass difference in just going up one size of chucks. Thanks again Rob, from Terry :-)..

Wow! Thanks for the center punch tip for minimizing runout. So easy that a guy feels like a dummy for not thinking of it.

Yes and if you have a cheap Chinese belt driven lathe like I do you can use the treadmill motor and PWM controller to turn it into a variable speed machine..:)

if you cant find treadmill motors you could go to the scrapyard and get an old flywheel
does mean you have to cut it up to make it fit on the lathe

Hi Rob. Good video. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on the AL-51G - Bench Lathe? I am looking at getting a lathe and that lathe is around my budget.

So how bad of an idea do you think it would be to use cast aluminum? Other than the obvious concerns that it break and send the chuck flying across the shop.
