Lathe Chuck Backing Plate

In This short video we fabricate a backing plate for my Rohm four jaw lathe chuck. I could have used this the other day setting up the Wabble eccentric in the lathe. Most of you have seen me use one with the six jaw chuck in other video's. Superior to loose parallels, the lathe backing plate allows you to quickly space a thin or disc shaped part off the back of the chuck with a simple easy to make piece of setup tooling. It also provides a solid surface for drilling against.

Nice bandsaw work there. Love the doubleboost comment at the end. Another great video. You, Adam, Keith, John and Mr. Pete...all great teachers... us machinist newbies are so lucky to have such great information at our finger tips.

I like how your videos are no nonsense like your book. It is nice to see projects done by someone who has done it for a living. You get to see the tricks and work arounds which most text books don't give you.

Very nice Tom, an Ox-worthy lathe accessory.  It looked like the hardest part was scraping the goo off the finished part.

That unintended mess removal reminded me of a cartoon I saw like 40 years or so ago:   There is this guy in a paint store and the clerk sets two cans on the counter, a half-pint and a gallon can then he says to the customer "The little can removes the paint and the big can removes the mess that the little can leaves behind!"

It is therefore useful to have a sense of shop humor when simple procedures turn diabolic.

Band saw as a very narrow belt sander! I like!

I was a bit surprised that you didn't drill holes just inside each of the corners to give a place for the band saw to end its cut, but this was probably faster.

Hi Tom
You might already know this but I wanted to pass it along just in case. I purchased a back plate to mount a 4 jaw chuck on my L&W dividing head, the problem is I have not been able to find a back plate with 2 1/4-10 threads. One night while searching ebay for a couple of house I managed to find a tap that size, could hardly believe it. Back to the back plate, I indicated it in to .0002 run-out; then when I checked the face run-out it was right at .003. I needed to find a very thin spacer material, I wound up using cigarette papers. They measure right at .001 thick, I used 2 pieces in 2 of the jaws and one had 3 pieces. Works great if you ever need a really thin material spacer.

Hi Tom,   Another cool Ox Tool, I'm going to have to try and learn that bandsawing technique, that looks really handy, you have a lot more patience than I, as soon as that glue started to give me trouble, I would have been dunking it in some lacquer thinner, or soaking it with WD-40.
  Great video as usual Mike

Hi Tom,
You sure made quick work of that backing plate with your bandsaw!  And, yes, WD40 works great on most all adhesive removal, and is cheap.  Nice job!  Thanks for showing us.
Best Regards,
Reid

Love the ending! Doubleboost would be proud!

I was expecting to see you skim the surfaces with a fly cuttter or chuck it up sticking out in the lathe and take a light skim.  Not needed?

Thanks for another good one!

Nice work Tom with the poor man's waterjet.  You have some nice material "just laying around"....That spray mount works really well, sometimes too well.
