Sticky Epoxy Floor ? - What's causing it and how to fix it (2020 version)

By the term sticky epoxy I mean two-component resins coatings that don’t cure properly. If something like this occurs, the results can be disastrous. The only solution is to basically remove all the sticky coating with a spatula, clean the substrate and re-coat it.

So how exactly does sticky epoxy arise and how can it be avoided? Here are the key reasons:

– Forgetting to add the hardener (or the B component) in the mixture. For more information on this read the article here

– Lazy mixing. This occurs when the resin and hardener are not mixed properly. Most systems need to be mixed for at least 3-4 minutes with a proper electrical mixer. Some workers think they can mix the screed with a stick, others are too impatient to mix for more than a minute.

Improper use of proportions. Each epoxy system comes in its own sets and with its specific proportions of each component. Sets should be applied as they are provided by the manufacturer. Don’t try to mix ‘a little bit of A’ with ‘a little bit of B’. There is no guarantee that the systems will cure properly. If it is absolutely necessary to mix a small amount do it properly with a scale accoring the proportions provided by the manufacturer.

Hello, thanks for your video. I painted my garage two days ago with the two parts epoxy, unfortunately I didn't use a mixer, I just mixed with a stick. So, half of my garage is completely dry and the other half is a little sticky, from where the mix wasnt done well at fist. Can I just put another coat on it?

Can you add a sealer Uv protectant? I have spots that will not cure using rustolium. Had 4 days of high humidity using the two part bags. Thanks

I found out from the manufacturer that the hardener in the packet was compromised. I didn’t know because I never did it before and it was in a sealed packet. It looked grainy when I painted it on. It is so bonded to the concrete, there is no scraping it off or pressure washing it. Now what? It is sticky to walk on…..

Thanks for the video. Is it possible that the epoxy hasn’t fully cured after 8days? My basement has no ventilation and its pretty cold down there. There are a few small patches that are still sticky after 8 days. I mixed hard for 15minutes. Thanks

In theory, what stops someone from burying improperly cured epoxy layers under several more coats of properly cured epoxy? Can it just be buried.
