As of 5 a.m. Monday, Ian became a hurricane is gaining strength with sustained winds of 75 mph, close to hurricane strength.

The National Hurricane Center says that Ian is undergoing the rapid intensification process. As it finishes its route through the Caribbean, it will cross very warm waters. The warm waters will give Ian the energy to strength significantly. So much so, that Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane (category 3 or higher) in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall in western Cuba as a hurricane. In light of that, hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been issued for portions of Cuba.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued along the west coast of Florida from north of Englewood to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Lower Florida Keys from Seven Mile Bridge westward to Key West.

A State of Emergency has been declared in Florida for Alachua, Baker, Bay, Bradford, Brevard, Broward, Calhoun, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Flagler, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Glades, Gulf, Hamilton, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Holmes, Indian River, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Lee, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Nassau, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Volusia, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington Counties.

The National Hurricane Center Center cone is pulling the storm ashore between Tallahassee and Jacksonville, with the center storm into central Georgia early Saturday morning, with rain beginning as early as overnight Thursday and Friday, impacting Macon and Warner Robins.
