2022 Ford Maverick XLT review by The Straight Pipes. The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is putting down 191 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque from a 2.5L 4 cylinder Hybrid Engine. At $35,345 CAD or $27,340 USD, would you take it over the Honda Ridgeline, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Ford Ranger or Ford F-150?

I've had a Maverick Hybrid for 11 months now and I love it. In the past I've owned full-size and mid-size Chevy and Ford trucks (2 of each). It can't tow the way my Silverado that I traded for it could, but for me, that isn't a big deal, I don't really tow anything. It does have a 3/4 ton payload capacity which is crazy. But for me, the best part is the 41 mpg I get commuting everyday. Beats the heck out of the Silverado's 15 mpg. The Silverado had a 34 gallon tank and the Maverick has a 13.8 gallon tank. I can go further on a tank of gas with the Maverick than I could with the Silverado's huge tank.

One thing to understand about the Maverick (along with many other hybrids) is that that CVT is not a pushbelt, but rather an eCVT, where the engine and the smaller of the 2 motor generators are connected at a planetary gearset, with the engine spinning the planet carrier and the motor generator spinning the sun gear. The continuous variability comes from the motor generator varying it's speed.

I have the hybrid xlt and agree with you that it is a little bumpy or truck feeling. Thanks for pointing out that the ecoboost model with its rear independent suspension is a smoother ride. I suspected that was the case. Still love it and I’m still on the first tank of gas from the dealer at three weeks in.

You forgot to mention it's a great fleet truck for blue collar companies that don't need awd but the utility and gas savings. Before the price gouging a hybrid starts at 20k usd.

The hybrid is targeted to fleet sales (for the XL trim) and for dads who want some kind of truck but also need to commute. 40+ mpg in city traffic + runs to the big box store and to the ball fields. It's an alternative to a compact SUV or sedan. It's not meant to really compete with bigger pickup trucks.

This FWD hybrid seems like it was purpose-built as a fleet vehicle where emissions and simplicity are more important than offroad capability. Thinking grounds crews and making hardware store runs.

Perfect urban or suburban work truck. 40 mpg commuter, hauls lawn seed and mulch from home depot, fits in a standard houses 🏘 garage. No wonder Ford has sold out production for the hybrid Maverick. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Hybrid is definitely the way to go on Maverick. I do wish there was an AWD option.

AWD Mavericks like the first one you drove have an IRS, FWD models use a cheaper, simpler torsion beam setup. Could explain why this one didn't handle the rough stuff as well.

Just got mine two weeks ago, and right on time since gas has skyrocketed. I haven't really broken it in yet, but I am averaging 47mpg. That's amazing.. I traded in an F150 and mercury grand marquis, and in comparison this little truck is tossable on fun roads. Is it perfect, naw.. but MAN do I love mine..

I got lucky and found an XL on a local lot while looking for a Ranger. Even with the additional $5K dealer charge, it was a good deal. It is a hybrid with the 2.5 liter engine. I am retired and this little truck met my needs. The power and speed surprised me. The mileage is terrific, and just in time. The price of gas is out of control, but I’ve only had to fill my tank one time since I bought the truck 5 weeks ago. I live in Orange County, CA, and still haven’t seen another one on the street. I’ve had a few cool cars in my life, but I’ve never had more random strangers stop and ask me about this cool little truck. It is certainly hard to find, and I’ve noticed a few for sale on the secondary used market with $10, 000 and up markups. It’s not often an economy car is worth more after you drive it off the dealer lot.

I also like how the Maverick's base model, XL, can have co pilot 360 as an option. Safety bundles should be available on all trims.

Nice little truck for the farm. It would have to have AWD through. Hybirid would be nice for us folks that have to drive an hour to work and live in the country.

This format of vehicle is THE format I've been looking for my whole life, so I sure hope it's quality and reliable, I just want it to work and be affordable to keep on the road without stranding me. I sure hope they did a good job because this format of vehicle is THE format I've been looking for my whole life! If it's ford plastic crap and the electronics fritz out all the time, then FAILURE. But gosh, thanks for just trying to provide an affordable, practical vehicle! Thank you! This is the only thing out there that is even in the realm of reasonable. I appreciate the attempt. And I will be at least trying this out and keeping a close eye on the rate of ford recalls. If the first run of them fail, I'll be watching the 2nd and 3rd runs from the assembly plants, because I am so happy this vehicle has finally been made!

I’ve seen civics with good front tires go crazy places. People don’t get it. Do it!

This truck has me actually considering a truck as my next vehicle. Cost and fuel efficiency plus flexible capability? It looks really good in person too in Alto Blue. Can't find many good hatchbacks or wagons in this price range and this has more features...

Huge fan of how all Mavericks come standard with Auto high beams. If only all cars could have this night driving would be bliss. Also a fan of emergency braking with pre collision assist being standard on all models. The car brakes and helps reduce the speed at which an accident occurs. It's free! Wild when compared to 10 or 15 years ago when this would have been a very high end model high-end option.
