Same as the American Independence 1776... it wasn't American independence.. it was the official rule of the European colonialists in America.

There's way too much disrespect for indigenous Australians by narcissists and leftist's here. At 9:30am on 13 February 2008, Rudd presented the apology to Indigenous Australians as a motion to be voted on by the house. It has since been referred to as the National Apology, or simply The Apology. So this date of reconciliation should be the new date for Australia Day to once and for all.. end the invasion day dispute! Have some bloody respect for the feelings of all Australians, those who spitefully condemn indigenous Australians for opposing the date need a good kicking in the butt for their inconsiderate unapologetic and uneducated mind set and rhetoric! Be kind to our indigenous Australians.

As an Aboriginal-Australian who loves this country and would die for this country,
I refuse to celebrate my country on the anniversary date the English came here and started culturally-dispossessing, oppressing and murdering my people and ancestors.

Change the date so we can all celebrate,
or there is nothing to celebrate at all. Nobody’s is telling you not to celebrate, just do it on a more respectful day, a date that all Australian citizens can celebrate.

Nobody wants to celebrate Australia more than Aboriginal-Australians, we’re just tired of all the disrespect and negative discourse from non-indigenous people.

The constant vilifying and disrespect towards us in our own country is disgraceful.

Change the date so all of us can celebrate.

Imagine a world without Britain, Spain, Portugal and France. No imperialism at all.

The ignorance towards indigenous people seems to only be expressed with dismissiveness rather than with curiosity.
Why?
Because they know that bigotry and hatred rule their hearts and they are too cowardly to contemplate any alternative.

If the British had never come in the first place, it is highly likely the east coast of Australia at least would be French. The Dutch might have claimed Tasmania and New Zealand both, and possibly parts of Western Australia as well. How would Australia be like today if it was never colonised by anyone?

Some one was going to colonise Australia eventually. Some of whom are. The Dutch, French, Spaniards, Portuguese, Russians,
